New Fixed Networks market report from Business Monitor International: "Jordan Telecommunications Report Q2 2010"

April 7, 2010 - PRLog -- This quarterly update on the Jordanian telecoms market sees the introduction of several structural changes. These changes include a reorganisation of the various sections of the report and the adoption of a new format for presenting the operator profiles. The Mobile Data section of the report includes new coverage of the development of mobile value added services in Jordan, as well as an overview of some of the sector's recent contract wins. In this quarter, we have focused more attention on developing the mobile sections of our report, including the mobile operator profiles. In our next quarterly update, we plan to introduce considerable revisions to the fixed-line and broadband sections of our report. During 2008, Jordan's mobile subscriber market expanded by 18.2%, with the total number of mobile users rising to 5.523mn at the end of the year. Mobile subscriber growth in 2008 was stronger than in 2007 when the market expanded by 7.7%. It should be remembered however, that Jordan's largest mobile operators deducted large numbers of inactive prepaid users from their books at the end of 2007. This move resulted in a lower growth rate for 2007. By the end of 2008, mobile penetration in Jordan had risen 90.6%. We continue to believe that the sector harbours a certain number of inactive users, with  Umniah's customer base believed to contain a higher proportion of inactivity than larger rivals  Zain and  Orange. This phenomenon inevitably inflates the penetration rate. In February 2009, Jordan's telecoms regulator noted that two regional companies had expressed interest in acquiring 3G licences in Jordan. Although the regulator had planned to auction 3G licences before the end of January, the process has been delayed. Despite this delay, our understanding is that the regulator remains committed to issuing Jordan's first 3G licence in the first half of 2009. As we demonstrate in this report, the absence of 3G licensing in Jordan has not prevented the country's mobile operators from introducing a wide range of mobile data services. In our new section on mobile content, we provide an overview of the sort of mobile value added services (VAS) offered by Zain and Orange, Umniah and  Xpress, the latter of which operates an iDEN network in Jordan and offers a range of WAP-supported data services. By the time 3G services are commercially available in Jordan, it is thought that the country's mobile customer base will already be well-accustomed to using a wide range of mobile data services. This bodes well for the future growth of such services. Jordan remains in seventh position in  BMI's latest set of Business Environment Rankings for the Middle East. This is in spite of having increased its composite score as a result of a stronger performance in the telecoms market and country risk categories.
