Spring Break – In Ohio?

March 29, 2010 - PRLog -- KETTERING, Ohio—How can a church of about 100 people—including babies, toddlers and seniors—hand-deliver Easter worship invitations to 4,500 households in a three-hour span? With a little help from friends, of course!

New Day Church www.newdaysbc.com received assistance from Northeast State University (NSU) Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) of Tahlequah, Oklahoma www.nsubsm.com to hang the cards on homes, mostly single family dwellings, in a three-mile radius from where the church worships at Kettering Recreation Center. A team of 46 students and leaders arrived in Kettering March 15 to partner with New Day to distribute the Easter invitations.

“Having the partnership of a team of young, able-bodied students to go door-to-door was a true godsend,” said Pastor Barry Jude. “Although New Day members are accomplished at canvassing neighborhoods, we were able to cover a lot more ground in a very short period of time with help from our friends from Oklahoma.” www.broadlf.com/NewDay/blog/

The team of college students and leaders gave up their spring break to travel to Ohio to work with the state convention, colleges and churches in Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati. It was mystery adventure for the Oklahoma students, who sign up for a mission trip without knowing their destination.

NSU BCM Ministry Intern Kim Eubanks drew on her prior summer experience working with Brian Frye, who serves in collegiate ministries for the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio, to help plan the seven-day mission trip. In addition to door-to-door canvassing, students performed some manual labor as well as evangelism ministry on Ohio university campuses. In Dayton, students also assisted Renovation Church and the Edgewood Center.

While partnering with New Day Church, students walked an average of four miles in 40-degree weather to drop cards in Kettering, Beavercreek, Sugarcreek and Bellbrook. Although the impact of the card drop cannot be fully measured until after Easter, hits on the church’s website spiked the day after and have continued at an elevated level since, according to Jude.

“This timely opportunity was just another example of God’s faithfulness to our church and evidence that the strategy to plant and grow new churches is His will,” he said. “God continues to provide New Day resources we need, whether it’s facilities, innovative ideas or people for ministry.”

Eubanks said students came home with new enthusiasm from insights into evangelism and church planting discovered in Ohio. “It was really neat for them to see you don’t have to have a building or all these other things,” she said. “You just have to invest in people.”
