March 27, 2010 - PRLog -- Peggy Kennedy, author of “Approaching Neverland: A Memoir of Epic Tragedy and Happily Ever After”, knows a thing or two about growing up amidst chaos. Her mother suffered from bipolar disorder in a time when such illnesses were closely guarded secrets. It was the 1960s, and treatments for such disorders were limited to electroshock therapy and debilitating drugs. No picnic for the patient or the family.
Approaching Neverland recounts Peggy and her family's attempts to deal with their mother's mental illness during a time when it was little understood and even feared. With brutal honesty and surprising humor, Peggy shares the turbulence of growing up under the shadow of Barbara's illness, of being shuffled from one family member to the next, and of visiting her mother in the mental institution. As the years pass, the shadows of Barbara's challenges become a loving legacy in Peggy's quest to achieve happiness and fulfillment in her life.
Now as Mother’s Day approaches, Ms. Kennedy has created a promotion to honor mothers around the world and all those who suffer from mental disorders. Between March 25th and May 31st, 20% of all copies sold, including paperback, hardcover or electronic copies, will be donated to NAMI Walk San Francisco Bay Area to help families dealing with loved ones with mental illnesses.

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a grassroots non-profit dedicated to providing help, education and support to those in need. The NAMI Walk raises funds to provide free mental health programs to individuals and families dealing with mental illness including Family to Family, In Our Own Voice, and Peer to Peer in the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Solano.
