Medica Instrument Mfg. Co. launches India’s first Media Preparator.

Traditionally, media has been prepared by mixing, agitating, and pouring into beakers as per the required quantity; after which, it is sterilized in an autoclave. The manual media preparation process has several disadvantages like difficult to ensure homogeneity & uniformity when preparing large volume media. It is easily prone to contamination due to manual intervention at every step of preparation, increased number of glassware used, and due to the fact that it is handled manually, post-sterilization.

Also in the sterilization process, autoclave doesn’t indicate the temperature of media inside the flask. When the flask or beakers are removed and allowed to cool in air or cooled by pouring tap water on them, uniform cooling does not occur. Besides, the risk of contamination also increases. Since the media is sterilized, one cannot counter check the pouring temperature for risk of contaminating the media. It involves operator-dependent guesswork - which is not desirable. Thus, the reliability and repeatability of the manual process is always doubtful. A media preparator, on the other hand, eliminates all these hassles and provides dependable and reproducible results.

To overcome this problem Medica introduces India’s first Media Preparator cum Autoclave under the brand name ‘EQUICLAVE’. It is basically an autoclave with special features for handling of liquid media, broth, or any other media. The media is poured directly into a special container in the autoclave, which also has a magnetic stirrer. The media mixes in this, the temperature rises to a user-settable sterilizing temperature, holds for the desired time, then cools rapidly to the media pouring temperature between 45ºC & 65ºC; and then, without opening the autoclave, the desired volume of media can be dispensed directly onto Petri plates – placed in a clean bench – by an external peristaltic pump; and all this, while constant stirring of the media is taking place to prevent solidification. This entire process is automatic.The user has to just feed in parameters as per his requirements.
