By: Grant Butler Coomber Awareness of how indoor airborne allergens, viruses and contaminants affect the health of vulnerable groups is increasing. Existing solutions often rely on air purification systems that are expensive to run, utilise harmful chemicals and are not fully effective. EHS is pioneering the use of SANYO Virus Washer technology in the UK healthcare sector. This range of easy to install and compact units force air through a honeycomb filter containing electrolysing tap water, neutralizing airborne allergens, viruses and other contaminants and producing a constant stream of cleaned air from the unit. The Virus Washer technology does not require any additional chemicals and uses the chloride ions present in ordinary tap water. When electrolysed within the SANYO unit, hydroxyl radicals and hypochlorous acid are created that destroy the spikes on the surface of the virus. Electrolysed water particles also wrap around, disinfect and deodorise airborne viruses, bacteria and mould, as well as pollen, dust mite faeces and odour molecules. Neil Ellwood, Commercial Manager, EHS said: “Cleanliness and infection control is a significant part of the new CQC regulations on safeguarding people who use care services. In conjunction with other strategies, our technology helps a service provider deliver the right outcomes and comply with this important part of the new system of regulation and registration” The SANYO Virus Washer has been approved and tested by health experts worldwide including Allergy UK (The British Allergy Foundation), British Lung Foundation and Health Protection Agency. Legislation is bringing in a new system that applies to all regulated health and adult social care services. Registration is at the centre of the new system and providers must show they are meeting new essential standards of quality and safety across all of the regulated activities they provide. New registration comes into force on 1 April 2010 for NHS trusts (including primary care trusts as providers) and on 1 October 2010 for adult social care and independent healthcare providers (registration under the Care Standards Act 2000 continues until 30 September 2010). # # # About EHS EHS is the exclusive distributor of the SANYO Virus Washer range of products in the United Kingdom for both domestic and commercial use. SANYO developed the range of Virus Washer products to combat and suppress infectious airborne viruses, bacteria and allergens by rendering them harmless from the treated air using SANYO’s Electrolysed Water Technology. SANYO's joint research activities with independent institutions have revealed that SANYO's electrolysed water technology is able to remove more than 99 per cent of airborne viruses after one passage through the Virus Washer's disinfectant element; while more than 99.9 per cent of airborne bacteria are removed after five minutes. EHS and SANYO are committed to developing air purification solutions that meet tough independent standards for effectiveness.
