March 24, 2010 - PRLog -- For 10,000 years the Haida people have inhabited these islands and have a rich and diverse culture just waiting for you exploration. Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve is one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, its picturesque scenery, wildlife, biodiversity and archeological sites is not found anywhere else in the world.

So whats the best attractions and things to do on Haida Gwaii – Queen Charlotte Islands?

1.Hike to the top of Tow Hill in Naikoon park. From the top you can see far into the horizon, on some days you can see as far as Alaska.

2.Go visit the Pesuta Shipwreck, also in Naikoon Park. This almost 100 year old shipwreck was once a mighty log barge that is slowly withering away to the sands of time. The bow is still visible, and very photogenic. The hike to the shipwreck and back can take over 3 hours and well worth an afternoon excursion.

3.Head over to Old Masset and visit some of the local artists hard at work with their latest creations. Visit Sarah's Haida Arts and Jewelry and browse the unique and prized original Haida carvings, weaving and Haida exclusive argillite carvings. Later head over the the Haida Rose Cafe and Roaster and taste the finest coffee the Queen Charlotte Islands have to offer.

4.Go on a fishing trip. Some of the best salmon and halibut fishing in the world is found on Haida Gwaii. Any one of the fishing charter companies will ensure you will have a good time and help you catch the “big one”. Many charters will also arrange for the cleaning, processing and shipping of your catch back home, the only work you have to do is catch it and eat it.

5.See the remnants of the once glorious Golden Spruce just outside of Port Clements. This unique tree had golden needles and when the light hit it just right it would radiate with a shimmering glow. This tree featured significantly in Haida lore for 300 years and in 1997 it was maliciously cut down by a disgruntled logger angry at British Columbia's logging policies. However, a cutting was taken and you can see it in Millennium Park in Port Clements.

6.Explore the eclectic and visitor friendly town of Queen Charlotte City. Artists, one of a kind shopping and a selection of tasty restaurants will enchant your visit and make you wish the day would never end.

7.Stop and see Balance Rock. Just off highway 16, contemplate how this boulder is precariously perched on just a tiny piece of rock.

8.The Haida Heritage Centre near Skidegate is a unique museum consisting of 7 interconnected long houses. The museum explores the ancient Haida culture from when Raven first discovered humans along the coast of Naikoon park to the first encounters with Europeans and the modern day renaissance that has helped the people rediscover their almost forgotten heritage.

9.Hike up Sleeping Beauty Trail just outside Queen Charlotte City. This moderately rated hike will take you up to the top of the mountain and will give you a stunning view of Graham Island, on a clear day you can see clear across to Tow Hill. Take a picnic lunch, plenty of water and make a day of it.

10.Take a guided tour into Gwaii Haanas Park and see whales, bears, eagles and sea lions up close and personal. Visit the ancient Haida village sites of Skedans, Tanu and Ninstints and listen while the Haida Watchmen regale you with the rich history and mythology of these sites. Bathe in the warm pools of Hot Spring Island with the San Christoval Mountains as our backdrop.

These are just some of the things you can do on Haida Gwaii. If you are planning to visit this place I would recommend a full travel guide so you can get all the information you need on accommodations, where to eat and detailed directions to make the best of your visit to Queen Charlotte Islands BC.http://www.queen-charlotte-islands-bc.com
