24 Hours, 100s Of Photos, One Grand Vista For Artprize

Grand Rapids, Michigan—On Monday, March 29, 2010, local photographer Steven Huyser-Honig plans to spend 24 hours on a hill overlooking downtown Grand Rapids. He’ll take hundreds of photographs of small sections of the skyline with a super telephoto lens. He’ll assemble them into his 2010 ArtPrize entry—a seamless and incredibly detailed four-foot-by-ten-foot panorama of Grand Rapids.

“Even last year, the skyline from the Medical Mile to the Van Andel Arena was full of cranes. Now that most construction is complete, I want to capture our brand new city, bursting with potential,” Huyser-Honig says.

Approximately every half hour, he’ll take a series of photographs that will be blended together to form a vertical section of the skyline. These vertical panoramas will then be blended to show the sweep of one day, midnight to midnight, from left to right. Huyser-Honig will shoot from the hillside where Sunset Avenue NW ends at the I-196 Ford Freeway—between the Lane Avenue and M-45 exits.

Huyser-Honig chose Monday, March 29, hoping to capture the full moon rising above Grand Rapids. If clouds obscure the sky, he’ll choose the first clear night after that for a proof of concept shoot. Then he’ll reschedule to take advantage of the April 28 moon.
