Uvita - A Brief History Of The Popular Seaside Community

Uvita is located a few miles south of Dominical on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast. With a small population, Uvita makes up for it with a booming commercial and tourism sector.

March 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Some time between the years 1954-57, Uvita was first established by a man named Fernando Cruz. Around this time Fernando and his wife Leonor and son Carlos Fernando settled in the area now known as the entrance to Punta Uvita.

Over the following years, the Cruz family began acquiring property with hopes of developing the area or at least creating a tranquil refuge for their family. Fernando also had visions of running an airplane business from the area along with raising cattle.

By 1962 the Cruz family had all passed aside from their son, Carlos Fernando Cruz who then gained control of the family businesses and property. Carlos was quickly overwhelmed by the responsibility of keeping the family business alive. During a flight in one of his families planes there was an accident near the mountain summit Kamuk, on route to San Jose, and Carlos Cruz was killed.

After his death, the family business (Hacienda Bahia) was obtained and power transferred to the state banks of Costa Rica. Later during the late 60s and early 70s, ALCOA the world’s current leading producer and manager of primary aluminum, purchased Hacienda Bahia in part of their plans to export of Bauxite and other products. ALCOA is the company responsible for the construction of the road from Perez Zeledon to Uvita over the mountains above Uvita (http://www.uvita.net).

In 1980 the Hacienda was populated by more than 90 families from Playa Matapalo to Quepos.  Afterwards, the Institute of Agrarian Development, bought and parceled lands, which created the community we know today as Uvita, Costa Rica with more than 800 inhabitants, and a student population of more than 200.

Today Uvita is hardly recognizable from the early days of it's formation. In this moment, it is Uvita that is the centre for commerce along the Southern Zone of Costa Rica on the Pacific Coast. With office buildings and strip malls being created, there is always a constant construction project in the works somewhere in Uvita.

Along with the increase in commercial attention, the Uvita real estate (http://www.costaricapropertysite.com) business is also experiencing an influx in attention. Properties are constantly being negotiated throughout the Uvita area as we begin to see the formation of what could become...the commerce capital of the Southern Zone in the coming years.
