Briarcliffe College Women’s Bowling Team Victorious In Semifinals

Team makes Briarcliffe College history as first-ever to compete in finals. The Seahawks women’s bowling team successfully competed against 14 colleges to place 4th in the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Team Sectionals.

March 22, 2010 - PRLog -- The Briarcliffe College Seahawks women’s bowling team successfully competed against 14 different colleges to place 4th in the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Team Sectionals, and propelling the team to qualify for the National Tournament in Texas next month.  This is the first time since the Briarcliffe College women’s bowling team was formed in 2000 that the team has made the finals.

Over a weekend, 64 teams competed in the semifinals held around the country to qualify for 16 spots at the National Tournament.  The Briarcliffe College women’s bowling team competed in Allentown, Pa., beating teams from Penn State, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

“We are extremely proud of our team and thrilled by this milestone for Briarcliffe College,” said Gina D’Amaro, Briarcliffe College Director Associate of Athletics.  “The Briarcliffe College Seahawks men’s and women’s bowling teams have enjoyed a remarkable season, earning victories back to back and individual team bowlers capturing prizes during competitions.”

Earlier this year, the men’s and women’s bowling teams won the Suffolk Community College Tournament, Briarcliffe Invitational, the Blue and Orange Tournament, and the Westchester Invitational. The men’s bowling team also won the Viking Classic held in Wallingford, Conn.

“The weekend semifinals was an intensive line-up of games against tough competitors and each player gave her all to bring the team to victory,” noted Briarcliffe College Bowling Teams Head Coach Steve Tisman.

Briarcliffe College freshmen Danielle Cessman, of Patchogue, and Stephanie Guzik, of Farmingville, stepped up to lead the team during the semifinals, while seniors Cheryl Drusin, of Holbrook, Gina Capone, of East Islip, and Taylor Maharaj,of Patchogue, played a huge part in the qualifying victory.  And in a clutch, Blue Point’s Melissa Banks came off the bench to perform.

The Seahawk men's and women's bowling teams are members of USBC Collegiate. Briarcliffe competes in a series of 10 to 15 sanctioned tournaments, including two tier-1 tournaments every season. The schedule affords Briarcliffe's bowlers the unique opportunity to take the lanes against some of the top college bowling teams in the nation.
