By: Fingerprint DC Sakura, which means cherry tree in Japanese, is Ms. Somersall’s collection of jewelry that was inspired by the lush cherry blossoms that are indigenous to a variety of Asian countries including Japan, China, India and Korea. Using rose-gold and pink sapphires, Somersall’s pieces highlight the different shades of pink of the flowers that the Cherry Blossom tree produces. While the full collection features everything from cocktail rings to earrings, this year Somersall will also be introducing ear clips to her luxury line. The two new ear clip designs include a pave canary diamond with center citrines and a pave pink sapphire set in rose gold. “I’ve been inspired by the natural beauty of the places where I’ve spent a lot of time”, said Somersall, who lives splits her time between living in Washington, D.C. and Okinawa, Japan, where her Marine husband is stationed. The history, landscape, and culture of both of these locations have impacted her designs. Somersall uses a wide range of materials for her collections, varying from the crystal and gold vermeil of costume jewelry to the precious metals and gemstones of very fine jewelry. She places emphasis on creating elegant forms, feminine flourishes, and superb technique and styling. Somersall’s jewelry ranges in price from $85 to $20,000, variances resulting from diversity in material choices. She often works with custom orders and completes start-to-finish custom work using precious metals and stones, often sourced from the clients themselves. Suzanne Somersall, who studied visual art and jewelry design at the L’Atelier in Florence, Italy as well as the Rhode Island School of Design, will be appearing at Ginger on March 25 from 6-8 pm and and March 26 and 27 from 12-3 each day. The showcase event on March 25 from 6-8 will feature cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and cherry-blossom cupcakes from celebrity cakemaker Fancy Cakes by Leslie. There will also be live music by Miya Aoki, who will be playing the Koto, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument. Ginger is located on Bethesda Row at 7114 Bethesda Lane in Bethesda Maryland, and online at www.gingerstyle.com.
