Outlines initiatives on  Jobs, “Green” IT and Cybersecurity

LAS VEGAS, NV. - The Learning Center (TLC), Nevada’s oldest Information Technology (IT) training company, is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary.   “As we reach this milestone, I want to thank the businesses, agencies, organizations and individuals that have made our success possible”, says Linda Montgomery, TLC founder and President.  She adds “when we opened in 1985, the IBM PC had just been introduced.  Needless-to-say there’s been a huge evolution in PC technology and Information Technology over the past 25 years”.

Montgomery goes on to talk about three Company initiatives targeting special conditions in our community and the IT world at large.  The first is to get people back to work.  “With Las Vegas unemployment hovering at 13%, it’s critical we use our resources to help unemployed job seekers get the computer skills  necessary for today’s technology dependant jobs” she adds.  As a community service, TLC conducts a free one day open enrollment class every Tuesday.  Specifically tailored to unemployed job seekers, the class covers intro to computers, intro to the internet, resume preparation and resume posting.  “We not only teach vital skills, we provide a free lunch all intended to make the day special for people who are struggling and looking for hope” Montgomery ads.  For those individuals needing more extensive retraining, TLC is working with various Workforce Investment  Act (WIA) agencies, the Nevada Department of Rehabilitation and Training, and other partners to define and fund individual special training programs.

The second initiative addresses the evolving demand for the implementation of Green IT practices.  Montgomery states “this initiative takes on more importance each day as businesses consider how they can comply with EPA, supplier, investor and customer expectations”.  She goes on to say “whether you believe in global warming, or the need to recycle discarded computer technology properly or just want to focus on reducing operating cost, our Green IT training will help you with all three”.  The government’s commitment to ”green” jobs is evident in economic stimulus package  which contains $2 billion for “green” job development.  And on January 8, 2010 President Obama announced $2.3 billion in federal Tax Credits targeted to create “green” jobs.  “We have access to funding that will pay for individuals and company staff to train in Green IT practices” she states.  “The number of people who can be employed in “green” jobs installing weather stripping or building solar and wind technology is limited.  By comparison consider the number and pervasiveness of PCs/computer networks and you get some idea of the scale of the “green” job opportunity in IT” she comments.

Finally, the third initiative involves network/cybersecurity.  While TLC has been providing cybersecurity training for more than 6 years, the issue has risen to a new level of importance as the frequency and severity of cyber attacks has increased.  The Cyber Security Research and Development Act of 2009, which passed the Congress last month by a vote of 422 to 5, evidences the government’s commitment to protect computer networks.  “Over the past 25 years, PCs have evolved from stand-alone individual work stations to connection points into very sophisticated networks.  With that has come risk to those networks that ranges from mischief to business devastation or, at the extreme, destruction.  Network security knowledge is the beginning of a good defense and we are focused on imparting that knowledge” she states.

“As we look into the future, we see jobs returning; jobs requiring basic and advanced computer skills; jobs requiring knowledge of best practices in Green IT, and jobs requiring knowledge of network security-TLC will continue to evolve and deliver the training essential to build those skills and impart that knowledge” Montgomery states in closing.
