March 15, 2010 - PRLog -- South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Michael Shapiro, MD, chief of orthopedic spine surgery, is the first surgeon on Long Island to use a recently-FDA-approved injectable bone augmentation material for vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty, two minimally-invasive surgical procedures that repair a vertebral compression fracture (VCF).

Cortoss™ Bone Augmentation Material mimics the physiological properties of human cortical bone (cortical bone is one of the two types of osseous tissue that forms bones - it facilitates the bone's main functions, which is to support the body, protect organs, provide levers for movement, and store and release chemical elements, mainly calcium and phosphorous).

Cortoss is the first alternative to polymethylmethacrlyate (PMMA) cement.  PMMA has historically been used to affix orthopedic implants and is primarily meant to fill the spaces between the prosthesis and the patient’s bone.  Cortoss was specifically designed for use in the vertebral body to restore its mechanical conditions, match the properties of natural bone, and set quickly to create a load bearing implant more in line with the mechanical properties of cortical bone.

“The outcomes of patients that have been treated with Cortoss confirm why I and many of my peers agree that Cortoss will advance the development of treatments for vertebral fractures that concentrate on the patients’ physiology,” said Dr. Shapiro.

Dr. Shapiro and his colleagues at South Nassau use a range of patient-centered, minimally-invasive surgical approaches that have proven to provide short- and long-term relief from debilitating, painful back problems. These approaches include lumbar disc replacement (which is prescribed for patients with one diseased disc and have failed six months of non-invasive treatment), kyphoplasty (a procedure that corrects degenerative disc diseases such as vertebral compression fractures) and X STOP (a minimally invasive surgery to implant a device that alleviates the pain and symptoms of spinal stenosis.
