Barrows is a painter and sculptor and has been showing successfully at the Red Bluff gallery for three years. The unusual title of her exhibition is derived from both the editorial direction of her current work and the paintings she is showing. “Dead Crow” is used in a figurative, as well as literal way, to refer to how the artist symbolizes death and recycles “dead” objects in her work. “The death of innocent things by our fast paced life style and the little things that get left behind can be reborn to our attention, admiration and awe,” explains the artist. Her sculptural works have resulted in a large group of local collectors, fascinated with her ability to give “rebirth” to found objects. “The sculptures are mostly white cement with very old glass, metal, and other found objects”, Barrows comments. “The abstract paintings and sculptures are similar in their use of texture and rhythm. I like the free form of abstract works.” Barrows’ sculptures are both colorful and full of history. For example, looking at a broken teacup, sticking out of one sculpture, the viewers might find themselves wondering where it came from, how it got there, and who broke it. The artist uses white cement in her sculptures, which gives the embedded objects more definition and attention than could be achieved with colored clay. The white cement is extremely durable. Barrows also paints, mostly acrylic on large canvas. Her work is full of interesting symbols and hidden meanings, but it also appeals because of her use of colors that imply emotional content. The “Dead Crow” exhibit will run from April 2 to April 30th in the Main Hall. The show will also be featured in the Window Gallery from April 19 to 30. The annual “Abstract & Dada Open” exhibit will also run in the Main Hall of the Red Bluff Art Gallery from April 2 – 30. About 20 other artists are featured in the Abstract open show. Local artist Bruce Ross brings a large piece of dada art to the show with his “Frozen Push Mower.” A live art demonstration will take place during the Opening Reception. Phil Dynan and John Stewart will create a large piece of abstract art on the Main Hall stage during the event. Visitors are forewarned to stay well clear of the flying paint. New videos will open in the gallery’s “miniature theatre”, including an innovative set of “self-portraits” Jay Murphy’s “New Works” continue in the Window Gallery until April 16. Jay will be on hand at the April 2nd Reception. His innovative and popular work is full of life and whimsy. New works includes paintings and sculpture.
