March 11, 2010 - PRLog -- San Diego, Calif., March 9, 2010----San Diego Self Storage (SDSS) is contributing to a bicycle drive to help accomplish a goal set by the legendary athlete and activist, Emmanuel Yeboah, to fill a shipping container with used bicycles and sporting equipment destined for his origin of birth, the West African nation of Ghana.   The public is invited to participate in this project to benefit children in Ghana by dropping off used bikes and sporting goods to the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA located at 200 Saxony Road in Encinitas during each Saturday and Sunday in March.  Equipment will be accepted from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on March 13-14, March 20-21 and March 27-28.  SDSS will provide a storage space at Encinitas Self Storage to store the bikes prior to loading the shipping container and supply a truck for transporting the bikes to the storage facility.
According to SDSS Director of Property Management Steve Teixeira, "We were incredibly moved by Emmanuel’s inspirational story and his desire to provide the children of Ghana with bikes.  It’s a daunting task when you are trying to accomplish a goal of this magnitude on your own.  When we were approached to participate it wasn’t a matter of ‘if’, it was a matter of ‘how much’.  We coordinated the details on our end with a few conversations to provide the support he was seeking.  With local management, our company resources can be mobilized within a matter of hours."  Founded in 1972, San Diego Self Storage is one of the largest locally owned and operated self-storage providers in San Diego County with a network of 15 neighborhood self-storage facilities and additional facilities in Los Angles and Orange County.

Emmanuel Yeboah was born in 1977 with a severely deformed right leg.  In 2001, he rode 400 miles on a bicycle donated by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) across Ghana to heighten awareness for fellow countrymen with disabilities.  In 2002, he was invited to participate in the CAF Triathlon Challenge in San Diego.  While visiting San Diego, physicians at Loma Linda University Medical Center performed surgery and fitted him with a prosthetic leg.  As a result, he was able to reduce is his time in the CAF Triathlon by three hours.  He has been awarded the CAF Most Inspirational Athlete of the Year Award, Nike’s Casey Martin Award and the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.  Emmanuel’s incredible story has been memorialized in the award-winning documentary, “Emmanuel’s Gift”, narrated by Oprah Winfrey.  Visit www.challengedathletes.org to learn more about contributing to the fund that will help Emmanuel build schools in Ghana, or to donate a bike, call Yvonne Espinosa, (858) 776-6813.  For further information on SDSS, please call (858) 909-0090 or visit www.sandiegoselfstorage.com.
