All Major MBA Entrance Exams Yet Again

The mba/ mms cet held last month turned out to be the easiest of all major mba entrance exams yet again.

March 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Unlike other MBA entrance exams, the CET tends to be similar each year. This year was no different as the exam pattern was exactly identical to that of previous years. Just like any other year, there are two possibilities with the cut-offs this year - they may either rise or fall.

1) The overall level of difficulty decreased:
Though the reading comprehension passage was a little tougher to read than the usual CET level, almost all other questions saw a lowered level of difficulty. The much-famed CET visual reasoning questions, which are arguably the toughest questions ever asked in any MBA entrance exam in India, also fizzled out on the difficulty level. English grammar and fill in the blanks (totaling to 30 questions) were the usual cake walk. The logical DI questions (also called analytical reasoning) were one of the easiest. The 20 questions on data interpretation were straight-forward. There were no questions on probability, and only one question on permutationscombinations. There were several arithmetic questions, most notably from the topic of percentage. All this is going to exert an upward pressure on cut-offs.

2) Students are better prepared with each passing year:
For the past couple of years, the CET has become slightly, but surely, tougher each year. But the cut-offs have not fallen. This is because the applicant pool has progressively become better prepared. CET 2010 reversed the difficulty trend. Instead of getting tougher it turned easier. This should also exert an upward pressure on the cut-offs.

WHY THE CUT-OFFS MIGHT FALL?

1) The paper was lengthy:
Though only some questions were more difficult than the earlier CETs, many questions were time-consuming. For instance, the questions on simplification of numerical expressions (often wrongly referred to as BODMAS questions), were excruciatingly painful as the answer choices were too close to approximate. Even an otherwise simple five question set on parajumble was confusing and required close examination to solve. Also, a common irritant was the structure of the multiple choices. Students expect a question to be followed by five choices of which they select one. CET 2010 had several questions followed by three choices (A, B, C). These were then followed by five compound-choices of the type “A and C,” “A and B or C!” This increased the time requirement for solving such questions. Because CET 2010 was lengthy, there might be a downward pressure on the cut-offs.

2) The number of applicants lowered:
The expectation is that there was an approximately 15 per cent reduction in the number of CET applicants this year. The lower number of applicants should cast a downward pressure on the CET cut-offs.

All said and done, we are likely to see a minor increase in the cut-offs this year. Last year, the cut-off for admission to Jamnalal Bajaj was 182/ 240 for graduates of the University of Mumbai. This year, the number may rise to 184. So, the corresponding figure for the test only will be about 152/ 200. Exam data sheet for CET 2010 Expected cut-offs for the top five programmes in Mumbai this year.
