Hip Hop Music & Grown Folks

March 6, 2010 - PRLog -- When it comes to Hip Hop Music, the lyrics have always been a driving force of its style. In its start, Hip Hop rappers have been attracting listeners in droves because of their infectious rhymes, politically conscious lyrics, and true to life tales that keeps your attention while generating a head bobbing flow at the same time. Nevertheless, there are moments when one can turn on the radio and know that Hip Hop Music just isn’t what it used to be, which is why “Grown Folks” has decided to change all of that…

Grown Folks is based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan and was founded and established in 2006 by Super Producer DJ Strange and one of the most talented Lyrical MCs in the Midwest, Don Juan. This Group has committed themselves to recreating the meaning and substance for today’s Hip Hop style and image. Members DJ Strange (Garrett Clark) and Don Juan (Wannace Perdue) have been partners in music since 1998. DJ Strange knew from a tender age that he was destined to have a successful career in music. His earliest influences were his Father and his Uncle. DJ Strange’s father sang in an R&B group known as People’s Choice and for inspiring Artists like Al Green while his uncle worked closely with the soulful Musical Group Earth, Wind & Fire as a Sound Engineer for nearly a decade. Such early exposure to the roots of creating musical compositions landed DJ Strange as a student attending the Interlochen School of Arts. There his love for music was fully developed and to a “Polish.”

Don Juan was born and groomed to perform and create music as well. He started his career out early as a Singer before he started playing drums. In the essence of time, Don Juan realized that his lyrics happened to be his strongest focal point. At this moment, he branched out into his career and began free-styling his rhymes in the hallways of the high school where he prospered to win numerous MC Competitions and Street Battles throughout the states of Michigan and Illinois. Grown Folks, meaning DJ Strange and Don Juan together, has been heavily influenced by the following Artists… Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, RUN DMC and LL Cool J. Moreover, the group itself has worked closely with additional Artists such as… Adina Howard, Sir-Mix-A-lot and Chico DeBarge.

Grown Folks continues to pierce its way into the Hip Hop Industry after performing and being noted at the Grand Rapids Arts and Music Festival in the years of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2004. All performances warranted “Stellar” reviews from surrounding Communities, Media, and Radio affiliates and supporters. Grown Folks has also made performances with at the West Michigan Wealthy Street Jam in 2002 and the African American Arts Festival in 2001. Other performances include the Intersection Bar & Lounge, The Lexicon Club, The Purple East Battle of the Bands, and a host of additional entertainment industry venues and events throughout the states of Michigan and Illinois.

To date, Grown Folks has released three musical projects (e.g. International Threat, Red Tape, and Shut Up When We Talk). Their 2008 album release, Shut Up When We Talk was recorded at SMG Records & Media and was nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ for the 3rd Annual Grand Rapids Hip-Hop Awards; DJ Strange was nominated for ‘Studio Engineer and Producer of the Year.’

DJ strange says their success is to be credited to the group’s willingness to stay true to an original Hip Hop quality, sound, and intern that can be kept up-to -date for the masses of today’s youth. Doing so with their unique style and lyrical approach will cater to their philosophy of what Hip Hop should be on a more positive note… This is what sets them apart from the rest of the pack in today’s Hip Hop Game. With its originality and unique Midwest Sound, Grown Folks has built a reputation that compliments their ability to compose and produce incomparable musical beats and lyrics that are soothing to the ears, yet groovy for the feet. In light of Grown Folks’ music production mastering, the group is known to have the much needed sound for today’s Hip Hop Industry.

To date, Grown Folks currently resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan and has recently secured a solid distribution deal for their upcoming album entitled, “For the Love of the Game.” The actual release dates are pending but coming soon!
