ELEW aka Eric Lewis :

"Every once in a while, an artist comes along who changes everything."

Producing something completely new and meaningful, this person fills a void within the fabric of our culture—a hole we didn’t even know was there. Past generations have laid claim to this type of iconoclast—Liszt, Warhol, and Coltrane are among the artistic beacons of years gone by. Today, another joins their number—an innovator, musical revolutionary and unmatched performer: ELEW, aka Eric Robert Lewis. Fusing traditional jazz with elements of modern rock and pop, ELEW’s masterful originals and blistering re-interpretations have ignited the interest of the country’s tastemakers and those in the cultural know. But more than this, he possesses that ineffable spark that we only associate with true genius. Everything that he creates bears his singular mark—the stamp of something that we have never seen or heard, but have always wanted to feel.

A native of Camden, New Jersey, ELEW began his musical studies at a young age. After being granted a full scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music, he set his sights toward making noise on a grand scale. Upon graduation, he toured the world, recorded, and performed continuously with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Elvin Jones, Cassandra Wilson, Roy Hargrove, and Joe Henderson among others. He won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition in 1999, his mesmerizing piano theatrics even then hinting at the new musical paradigm he would one day create.

Now, in the jazz tradition of interpreting popular tunes of the day, much like Art Tatum and John Coltrane, ELEW is making a substantial impression on the music world with a thunderous new style of playing: an inspired melding of ragtime, rock, pop & hip-hop that he calls Rockjazz. Now, as he continues to gain notoriety with his blistering renditions of hits by artists like Coldplay, the Killers and Nirvana, he has broken free of the rigidly defined boundaries of the traditional jazz world and ultimately given birth to something wholly original.

Last February, ELEW attended the TED Conference (Technology, Entertainment, Design), an event that brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk or performance of their lives. This year, ELEW had the honor of being one of these luminaries, and all in attendance were blown away by his trademark brand of piano-driven innovation. Since then, everything has been a blur. ELEW has been asked to perform at a veritable whirlwind of high profile events, including the 2009 Donna Karan Fall Runway Show, an exclusive pre-Oscar party attended by Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Oprah Winfrey and Hugh Jackman, an ultra-exclusive benefit for the Contemporary Art Fund at the Circle Filologico Milanese in Milan, and most recently a historic performance at our nation’s Capitol—the White House itself. His relentless innovation and disregard for the musical status quo has attracted the rapt attention and following of political, artistic, and cultural leaders from a wide variety of disciplines and geographic locations, including Michelle Obama, Simon de Pury, Donna Karan, Robert F. Kennedy III, Eric Schmidt of Google and Judith Jamison.

Striking examples of form, nuance, and atmosphere, the works of Eric Robert Lewis (as ELEW is known when composing for film) can be found within a wide variety of cinema. In addition to scoring award-winning documentary features like Pete Chatmon’s Premium and 761st, Michael Kirk’s A Trumpet At The Walls Of Jericho and most recently Andrew Jacobs’ Holocaust survivor documentary, Four Seasons Lodge, he has contributed music to Hollywood blockbusters like The Great Debaters. As commanding a presence on screen as he is on stage, he has made cameo appearances in Robert De Niro’s star-studded The Good Shepherd, the hit CW television series Girlfriends, and the film Caveman’s Valentine, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Lewis recently finished scoring his first Hollywood feature: The Stage 6™ (a division of Sony Pictures) 3-D horror film, The Dark Country, directed by and starring Thomas Jane. Additionally, he has composed the original music for a brand new dance piece entitled “Among Us,” in honor of Judith Jamison’s 20th anniversary as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director.

At what was supposed to be the end of an eight week European tour during the summer of 2009, after triumphant appearances at events like the Traumzeit Music Festival and the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival, Eric collaborated with Sting, Italian rock icon Zucchero and famed tenor Andrea Bocelli at the Ischia Global Film and Music Fest on the Island of Ischia in Italy. This event, which received widespread coverage in the Italian media, immediately presented Eric to a nation of music fans who seemed to be receptive to his innovation in a way he had never before encountered on such a large scale. Extending his stay by a full month, he was covered in major media outlets like SKYTV and Corriere Del Serra (Italy’s largest newspaper) and invited to perform in exotic locales including Capri, Sardinia, and even Viareggio, where Zucchero asked the pianist to once again join him, Sting, Jeff Beck and Bocelli for an August benefit concert for over 16,000 fans. During this extra month in Italy, Eric found a supporter in an Italian entrepreneur Marco Gualtieri of Jabadoo and took some time in Milan to record his debut album of Rockjazz covers, entitled ELEW Rockjazz: Vol. 1—to be released in Q1 2010.  The album will be available on iTunes and other selected online retailers.

ELEW’s passion for creation knows no boundaries, whether they be those of genre, discipline, era, or medium. A true Renaissance man, he is the voice of a new generation—with one foot firmly planted in the past, and the other striding into the future, he precisely captures the disposition of an age where looking backward is often the same thing as looking ahead.
