Feb. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- The idea behind DEEP SURFACE evolved in discussions between Al-Douri and Morioka as a means of describing the common ground between their highly individualistic styles. It concerns the act of painting as much as its final result.

To the artist, each passing instant of time leaves its imprint indelibly within the work surface, scattering through it a rich layering of artifacts. As the surface deepens, it is filled with the traces of what once was and what will come to be. To Al-Douri and Morioka, it is all one.

It is this continuum, this history—the communication across time and through space, moment to moment—that breathes life into these paintings. From the soaring angularity of Al-Douri's powerful, elemental forms to the exuberant spontaneity of Morioka's vibrant lines and animated glyphs, the works of both appear to owe their existence to a balancing act of matter and energy as magical and delicate as that of life itself.

JURI MORIOKA, born in Tokyo, has lived and worked in New York City since receiving her BFA in painting from Parsons School of Design in 1990. Her colorful abstract works have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the US, Asia and Europe, and are included in the collections of HH Sheikha Sheikha Bint Saif Al Nahyan and The Sony Corporation as well as many other private and corporate collections. Ms Morioka has been showing in the United Arab Emirates since 2005. She has given artist talks and lectures at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi and at The American University in Dubai.

TAHA AL-DOURI, born in Baghdad, lived for many years in New York City, having earned his M.Sc. at Penn State University and Ph.D. in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Al-Douri has exhibited in the United States, United Arab Emirates and Jordan, and his works are in the permanent collection of the University of Pennsylvania Fischer Fine Arts Library. As Assistant Dean of the School of Architecture and Design at NYIT Abu Dhabi Campus, Dr Al-Douri is a frequent lecturer on aesthetic expression in architecture, art, and interior design interlacing all aspects of life.
