Feb. 24, 2010 - PRLog -- LAS VEGAS -  Vision Source Las Vegas is offering three 2010 Las Vegas area high school graduates the opportunity to earn $1,000 toward college tuition. The deadline for the Vision Source Las Vegas See the Change Scholarship applications is Friday, March 12, 2010. Applications are available online at: www.visionsourcevegas.com, all Vision Source offices, and through the Clark County School District. Applications must be received in person at a local Vision Source office no later than March 12. Applications received by mail, and those received after the deadline, will not be considered.

Scholarship recipients must be students intending to pursue a degree in a health-, medicine-, or science-related field in the fall of 2010, either at a four-year college or university. In addition, they must have a proven track record of community service, and demonstrate visionary thinking in the development of community service–based solutions to health issues that challenge Las Vegas.

Past recipients include: 2009 Foothill High School Valedictorian, Jessica Heinz, who is planning to study a science-related field at University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana; and Matthew Phillips, who earned top honors in his 2008 Palo Verde High School graduating class, and hopes to study medicine at Brigham Young University.

As part of the application process, students will be expected to submit an essay including the following: a description of what they believe is an important health issue, and a proposed community-service project that will solve or mitigate that health issue.

Vision Source Las Vegas’ community-service programs include free diabetic eye screenings for diabetic patients and glaucoma eye screenings for those at high risk, as well as the See the Change Scholarship award. Individually, Vision Source doctors have traveled to various parts of the world to volunteer their time and services to meet the eye-health needs of those in less fortunate areas such as Mexico and Thailand.
