Feb. 24, 2010 - PRLog -- (Los Angeles, CA) In a video produced by Larry Cook, author of The Beginner’s Guide to Natural Living (http://www.thenaturalguide.com) Dr. Angela Agrios, ND explains how Naturopathic Medicine can successfully reverse high cholesterol. High cholesterol is problematic because elevated levels correlate with cardiovascular disease: increased risk of heart attack and stroke due to blocked blood vessels, compromised circulation of the extremities, as well as decreased perfusion of the brain resulting in cognitive decline.

High cholesterol is characterized by a total cholesterol level over 200, an LDL (Low-density lipoprotein) reading of over 100, triglycerides that are over 120, and HDL (High-density lipoprotein) numbers that are less than 45. HDLs are protective in that they take cholesterol from the arteries back to the liver, whereas LDLs take cholesterol back into the arteries from the liver. Triglyceride numbers may be used as a marker for carbohydrate intake and how well carbohydrates are being handled.

Naturopathic Medicine is a natural medicine model that emphasizes the identification and treatment of the root cause of disease in order to permanently restore health. Conventional and alternative diagnostic testing is used to evaluate the root cause of disease symptoms. Diet and lifestyle modifications are then prescribed in adjunct with appropriate nutrients, botanicals, homeopathics and natural hormones, which enable healing of the affected areas of the body.

“My first step is to remove sugars and flours ¬– such as cereals, pancakes, muffins, bagels, bread, pasta and crackers – from the diet because they all raise total cholesterol levels, LDL levels and Triglyceride levels. I take my patients off processed foods and foods with trans fats and replace those foods with whole, organic foods. I prescribe essential fatty acids such as fish oil, flax oil, avocado oil and coconut oil. I request that my patients add regular exercise to their routine. And I use supplements such as plant sterols to decrease absorption of dietary cholesterol and pantothene to help with lipid metabolism,” Says Dr. Agrios, ND

Natural living is a lifestyle that minimizes the intake of processed and chemicalized foods while maximizing the intake of whole, organic foods. Other aspects of natural living include detoxification, regular exercise, shopping at a health food store, using effective supplements, and visiting holistically oriented doctors. Mr. Cook says, “Virtually every disease and health condition can be prevented or reversed when someone adopts a natural lifestyle. This is essentially a conscious effort to eat the best food possible every day while avoiding processed and chemical foods in order to attain maximum nutrition, which then promotes a state of health and healing. For specialized assistance with diseases and health problems, I recommend that people visit a Naturopathic Doctor.”

“After three to six months I have my patients come back for cholesterol testing and for those who follow my guidelines, I find that their cholesterol levels go down and there is no need for cholesterol-lowering drugs,” states Dr. Agrios.  Mr. Cook comments, “Natural living and natural medicine work because the body will heal itself when given the right conditions. When people take responsibility for their food choices and lifestyle choices that affect overall health and also decide to work with a qualified natural medicine professional such as a Naturopathic Doctor, symptoms like high cholesterol will completely disappear.” To watch Dr. Agrios, ND explain in detail how she diagnoses and treats Adrenal Fatigue, visit http://www.thenaturalguide.com/nd/ag-high-cholesterol.html.
