Feb. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- A rare surgery on 4 years old boy (who came from Iraq) suffering from Bilateral Wilms’ tumor (Renal nephroblastoma) was successfully performed at Moolchand Medcity.  A team of super-specialists physicians (including General Surgeon, Urologist, Urosurgeon and Pediatrician) from Moolchand took the challenge and performed the rare surgery by removing the tumor from both the kidneys (tumor size in left kidney=2.5x2.5x2.5 and in right kidney=8x7x8) with minimal blood loss.

“The patient was in advanced stage when he came to us for the treatment.  After chemotherapy in Iraq, his stage regressed for a while but relapsed again so he was referred for surgical excision.  Considering the rarity of the disease, it was a challenging job to perform this surgery on such a small child.  Our team of eminent surgeons, general surgeons, anesthesiacist and paramedical staff accepted the challenge and both sides tumors were removed at one sitting.  It took almost 3 ½ hours to perform the rare surgery and only 150cc of blood was required to be transfused to the patient.  The child tolerated the surgery well and is discharged with the hope that he will lead a normal life” said Dr. Anil Malik, General Surgeon, Moolchand Medcity, New Delhi, India.  At present, the patient is normal and moving towards fast recovery.

“Moolchand has provided a new lease of life to my son.  He was diagnosed with the Bilateral Wilm’s tumor at 6 months of age.  When chemotherapy didn’t help, doctors back home suggested removal of his tumor.  We were referred to Moolchand by the Iraq Embassy.  Today his smile; after the successful removal of tumor; makes me forget all the pain and trauma we went through all this while.  I thank Moolchand for the excellent facilities and care they have provided to us” said Maha Abbas Mahdi (mother of the patient) who accompanied him to India for the Bilateral Wilm’s tumor surgery.

About the rarity of the tumor
Wilm’s tumor also known as renal nephroblastoma is the fifth most common pediatric malignancy and the most common type of renal tumor in children.  Bilateral Wilm’s tumor is a rare condition of kidney tumor that typically occurs in children and it is very rare in adults.  The majority of the cases (75%) occur in otherwise normal children; and a minority (25%) is associated with other developmental abnormalities.  It is highly responsive to treatment, with about 90% of patients surviving at least five years.  It is mostly inoperable.  It is a congenital defect and is prevalent in children up to 7 years of age.

Most nephroblastomas are unilateral, being bilateral in less than 5% of cases.  A rupture of Wilm’s tumor put the patient at risk of hemorrhage and peritoneal dissemination of the tumor.  In such cases, surgical intervention by a surgeon who is experienced in the removal of such a fragile tumor is imperative.  Most of the children die because of delay in diagnosis and lack of medical facilities.  Growth retardation, anaemia and failure to thrive are a few symptoms of the disease.  Though, there is no preventive measure for this but early detection and intervention can lead to better prognosis.
