Spectators on local hills may only get a glimpse of snowy slopes, but the audience at BC Place attending the Opening Ceremony’s were treated to light flurries of immaculate snow, courtesy of Vancouver FX supplier HollyNorth. Teaming with veteran FX master, Gary Paller, HollyNorth beat out major international event suppliers to ensure Vancouver’s games featured some of the movie magic the region is known for.
“We knew we wanted to be part of the show as soon as we learned of Vancouver’s successful bid. This was the biggest production Vancouver has ever seen, and we wanted to show the world what we could do” said a tired, but happy Mike Kaerne, owner of HollyNorth. “We had to work really hard to catch the attention of the Australian based production team DAEP that was awarded the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Our first proposal allowed us to provide the falling snow, and after winning that contract DAEP decided to let us bid on a host of other effects. “
“We had a tough job with the snow effects, partly due to increased air pressure inside the BC Place air supported dome roof, but we persevered to create a blizzard as real as has ever been seen indoors before.” Paller mused. The sound of 60,000 people gasping as the Orca whale spouts sprayed up from the stage assured the FX team that the skilled Australian creative direction had utilized Canadian home town ingenuity to find a perfect balance. Just the type of international harmony the games hope to cultivate.
For the anticipated world broadcast audience, estimated to be 3 billion viewers the Olympic celebration began with the lighting of the torch. For the HollyNorth team of local FX technicians the celebration started when the last snowflake fell to the stage. Given the current warm weather and bare condition of the local slopes, that might be all of the snow many celebrants will get to see.
