Feb. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Irv Miller, Toyota Group vice-president, stated that Toyota has been investigating reports of jammed accelerated pedals in certain models over the past months.  These models were without floor mats, and the investigation has concluded that the accelerator could get stuck in the depressed position in rare instances.  This statement is extremely significant because it is the first time that Toyota has acknowledged that the occurrence of sudden acceleration could be caused by something other than entrapment by the floor mat.  In order to correct the problems with accelerators, Toyota is making changes to the braking system and shortening the length of the accelerator.  Changes to the floor underneath the gas pedal is also being done in some instances.

It remains to be seen whether or not the modifications being done by Toyota correct the accelerator problems.  The electronic throttle control system used by the automaker is blamed by consumers who have experienced themselves the uncontrolled acceleration that occurs.  Safety groups seem to agree with these consumers, and believe that several factors contribute to the faulty accelerators.  In fact, these groups believe that unintentional acceleration is due to a combination of things, including the electronic throttle control system.

Last year, a family of four was killed when their car suddenly accelerated while driving down the highway, causing the driver to lose control of the car before it crashed.  This incident thrust the accelerator problem in to the international spotlight, and 911 voice recordings of one of the passengers indicate that the accelerator had jammed in the frightening and horrendous last few seconds before the fatal crash occurred. California auto accident lawyers hope that the cause of unintentional acceleration can be quickly determined by Toyota, so that the problem can be solved before more people are seriously injured or killed.
