Can Museums and Galleries be Catalysts for Cultural Transformation?

Dan Siedell, author of "God in the Gallery," addresses this question at IAM's Encounter 10

Feb. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Dan Siedell is among the ten featured speakers at International Arts Movement's Encounter 10, taking place March 4-6 in Manhattan. Presenters will address ten questions facing the global creative community, and each question will be surrounded by performances, discussions and gallery visits.

Daniel A. Siedell is Director of the Whale & Star Foundation, Miami, Florida and Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.  From 1996-2007 he served as Curator of the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Siedell has an M.A. from SUNY-Stony Brook and a Ph.D. from The University of Iowa.  His publications include Weldon Kees and the Arts at Midcentury (University of Nebraska Press, 2003), Martínez Celaya:  Early Work (Whale & Star, 2006), and God in the Gallery (Baker Academic, 2008).

With an eclectic roster of dynamic speakers, performers and artists, International Arts Movement’s Encounter 10 promises to be the creative event of the year, if not the decade. Artists and creative catalysts from all over the world will wrestle with issues that face the global creative community, with live performances, art exhibitions, and panel discussions rounding out the event’s programming.

Additional questions being addressed include: “How then shall we tell stories?” … “Does avant garde mean anything anymore?” … “Can physical and digital get along?” … “From where will the audience come?” … “What is the quest(ion) of success?” … “Can faith communities foster artistry and creativity in culture?” and, “How can generosity and philanthropy lead to artistic sustainability?”

Additional speakers include Roberta Ahmanson (journalist and philanthropist), Jacob Marshall (Mae drummer), Makoto Fujimura (artist, author and former National Council on the Arts member), Matt Heard (pastor and wine sommelier), Mark Chambers (avant garde painter), Etsuro Sotoo (Japanese sculptor), Jeffrey Overstreet (author, film critic), and David Sacks (photographer).

Performers for the weekend include jazz pianist Deanna Witkowski and folk band Ben + Vesper, whose latest album was produced by Sufjan Stevens.

Encounter 10 will take place at the newly renovated Great Hall at Cooper Union, a place that has housed weighty ideas, thinkers and movements since 1858. Nestled next to the stunning new Cooper Union Main Building in Greenwich Village, the Great Hall will be serve as homebase for each of the 10 questions.

When not gathered there, participants will take to the streets. Carefully selected coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, museums, and clubs will serve as creative zones for engagement. In partnership with The Curator magazine, Encounter 10 will move out into the cultural hub that is New York City to encounter one another and explore, discover and enjoy the innumerable cultural artifacts that ae already part of the world that ought to be.
