Swansea’s annual Latin American Festival takes place in the Dylan Thomas Centre on Friday, 12 February and Saturday, 13 February.

Feb. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- Swansea’s annual Latin American Festival takes place in the Dylan Thomas Centre on Friday, 12 February and Saturday, 13 February.

This year’s vibrant multi-art festival focuses on Brazil, with music, film and dance, a Capoeira demonstration and stunning photographs by Erika Tambke. There will also be a free film for kids. Please see below for the full programme.

6:15 – 7:15pm –

Talk by Dr Suranjit Saha, a Brazilianist, from Swansea University (Free)

Title: Brazil: An Emergent Giant of the 21st Century

(um gigante emergente do século XXI)

In this presentation, he will outline Brazil's cultural and economic strengths, provide a quick timeline of its fascinating history and explain why he thinks that Brazil will indeed emerge as a great nation in this new century, rivalling the United States, and be a strong player on the world stage.

Latin American Guitar Concert

11:00 – 13:00 – Brazilian Film for children: Tainá 2

13:30 – 15:00 – Capoeira – demonstration and workshop by Mestre Maxwel Freitas and his team.

Workshop 1 for children between 5 and 8 years old (must be accompanied by an adult).

Workshop 2 - for children 9 or over, teenagers and adults.

15:15 – 17:15 – Brazilian documentary ‘Imperatriz do Carnaval’ by Fernando Schultz.

17:30 – 18:30 – ALAS has got talent: ALAS members are   invited to play instruments, sing, recite a poem or dance. Each person has 4 to 5 minutes. (free)

20:00 –24:00- An evening of Latin American Singing and Dancing

Latin-American Songs with Tony and Flaquito

Flaquito is a brilliant accordionist from New Zealand, who plays a variety of highly original versions of Latin American ballads inspired particularly by his travels in Colombia as part of Peace Brigades International.

Tony is a co-organiser of the ‘El Sueño Existe’ - Victor Jara Festival in Machynlleth, and performs songs by the great Chilean musician Victor Jara, as well as by Violeta Parra  and Chile's forgotten folk genius, Rolando Alarcón.
