Feb. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Tree and Single – speed dating / tree planting

Trees for Cities will be launching a special Valentine’s Day event on Sunday 14 February at Sunnybrow Park in the Gorton area of Manchester with local partners, Red Rose Forest.

Speed-dating charity events are set to grow in popularity, and provides a unique selling point to singletons looking for love: even if they’re unsuccessful on the day, they’ve still made a positive contribution to the environment and day to day lives of residents in an underprivileged area.

This area of the city is in need of improvement and protection, so the charity will be recruiting single volunteers to pair up and plant 3,000 new hedge trees, including beech, crab apple and hornbeam.

Volunteers will rejuvenate the park over the course of the morning with hedge trees, providing shelter for local wildlife and increased biodiversity. The trees will create a new landscape in the park, beautifying this community space on the banks of the Gore Brook.

Sunnybrow Park is a potentially great resource for the area, with already mature trees and the stream running through, there is much potential for the park to be a valuable green space. Research has shown that such spaces are vitally important to the health and well-being of city residents, providing areas for exercise, tempering local climates and cleaning the air.

The speed-dating, tree-planting event will kick off at 11.30am; members of the local community will be welcome to join in the planting from 1.30pm.

Trees for Cities relies on donations from individuals in order to deliver projects like the one in Sunnybrow Park. Readers can support our project work by making a donation or buying a community gift at www.treesforcities.org.
