Feb. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- This year Valentine’s Day will be one for the record books.

With the economy the way it is many people will be looking for more budget friendly ways to woe their loved one. Some will be opting to stay in for a quite movie night, others will be searching the internet for discounts and deals. Regardless of how you budget, this Valentine’s Day will be one that will not only affect you and your loved one - it will affect local businesses such as gift shops, restaurants and florists.

It also doesn’t help that this day of love has fallen on a Sunday - a day most people prefer to stay home. The last time Valentine’s Day fell on a Sunday was in 2004 and this year it has also fallen on Chinese New Year. With so many different factors in play, local businesses will definitely feel the rippling impact it has on this normally very prosperous occasion.
Without a doubt the florist industry will be hit the hardest. Annual surveys by the National Retail Federation show that about a third of consumers buy flowers as a gift for Valentine’s Day. This statistic will be put to the test this year with consumers either lowering their budget on flowers or even forgoing them altogether.

So before you tighten your purse strings, Sarah Collins, general manager at Fund Flowers asks you to consider how your Valentine’s Day roses can mean more than the old saying “a rose is just a rose”.

It is no secret that the price of roses go up during Valentine’s Day. This is a mere result of supply and demand. “It’s true. If you want to send your sweetheart roses on the 14th it will cost you more but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t ways to get more for your money” said Collins. Her Toronto based florist is a not-for-profit organization and donates all of there profit back to the community. This February, as a tribute to Heart Month, Fund Flowers is donating 10% of all orders placed by Heart & Stroke supporters to the Heart & Stroke Foundation and these same supporters will receive a free bear, chocolates or balloon with their order.

If there is another charity you support you can donate to them instead. “We donate to many causes, so it can add a personal touch to your flowers and hold more meaning to the recipient when they see that a donation has been made to a group that is dear to them”.

Adding a sentimental touch to your roses can go a long way in adding value to your gift. This Valentine’s Day choose to give a gift that keeps on giving.
