Monrovia Unified employees exercise with weights and hula hoops during a wellness fair and the kickoff of a 10-week Take Action! healthy wellness program for Monrovia Unified employees at Santa Fe Middle School gymnasium in Monrovia on Monday, January 11, 2010. Take Action! is a 10-week program to encourage employees to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables and physical activity on a daily basis. MONROVIA - Jill Ramirez's 10-week fitness goal is simple: adopt heathier eating habits.

That means pizza and potato chips are out and fresh fruits and vegetables are in. The healthier outlook extends to her family as well.

"We won't be eating out as much and I'm trying to cook at home more," said Ramirez, an instructional aid at Santa Fe Middle School.

To help kick off her newly-adopted lifestyle journey, Ramirez and approximately 100 of her fellow Monrovia Unified School District colleagues packed Santa Fe's gymnasium last week for a fitness rally, part of the district's "Take Action! Employee Wellness Challenge for 2010."

Ramirez said she is inspired by her goal of "getting fit" and is already honing her culinary skills. Carbohydrates, especially pasta and rice, will be eliminated almost entirely.

"We eat a of pasta, so I'm cutting that out. I'm trying to have the family eat more fresh vegetables," she said.

The 10-week challenge program ends March 19, and is geared to encourage employees to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables, and to get the recommended 30-minutes of exercise per day.

"This is about setting the example of a healthy culture in students and trying to encourage district employees to be role models," said Lizett Olivares, a registered dietician with the Network for a Healthy California in Monrovia Unified.

Challenge participants mark the number of fruit and vegetable servings and the amount of physical activity they completed on a card.

The winning school at the end of 10 weeks receives a free bootcamp certificate, and employees who earn a minimum of 700 points also receive the certificate.

Valerie Parsons, a health and nutrition coordinator, said the district's focus on health and wellness is not surprising. Monrovia was awarded with the "School District of the Year Award" in the Los Angeles Region for the Governor's Council on

A few teachers are taking the fitness challenge a step farther by having their students get involved.

"Some teachers are having their students track the number of fruit and vegetable servings they have for one week," Parsons said, adding that cultivating teachers and other school site personnel as fitness role models will encourage students to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Last week's kickoff rally drew 77 employees and organizers expect the number of challenge participants to exceed last year's total of 330 employees.
