By: Anu Amaran Valentine’s Day can be more than just chocolates and flowers. The inspiration for this special event was a desire to offer something unusual and thought-provoking, something that would inspire and stimulate conversations about love, its meaning, and its primary place in our lives. Michael Sherman and Anu Amaran created the concept for this event while talking about the natural pairing of Indian food and poetry. Both are sensual experiences that draw upon the elements of romantic love. The event is structured like the Jewish Seder, with an order to the meal representing different aspects of love. And like a Seder, the food will be presented in symbolic ways, interspersed with readings of verses written especially for the event by Ms. Amaran, and with discussions about love led by Michael and Amy Sherman. The order of the Indian Love Seder follows the four stages of love. The four stages are attraction, commitment, transformation, and nostalgia. Each stage of love will be represented by a specific type of food. Attraction will be presented with hors d’oeuvres. Commitment will be represented by bread, and transformation, by curry. Nostalgia will come with the sweetness of an Indian dessert. Sharing a special meal this way will encourage participants to remember their own sweet memories of love. Both individuals and couples are welcome at this event. Everyone is encouraged to register in advance at the Courageous Loving website, courageousloving.com, by clicking on the “Events” page, or by calling (845) 536-2208.
