Feb. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- makers-online.co.uk are pleased to welcome Ann Catherall their first designer/maker to use this revolutionary new process.

Ann originally trained in sculpture but was always drawn to all things shiny; her first venture was the making of tiaras, hair accessories and corsages. From this she progressed to making jewellery mainly using wire and beads but then she discovered the revolutionary process of metal clay and knew she had found the medium she wished to work in.

Precious metal clay is a medium where recycled metals such as gold, silver, bronze or copper finnings are suspended in water and a non-toxic binder (clay) the clay is shaped into an article and then fired in a kiln thus burning the water and binder away leaving the pure shaped metal which is 99.9% pure.

This process gives the designer the freedom to create feeling and movement in their work that cannot be achieved using traditional techniques.

Ann also has a background in garden design and is influenced and inspired by this because she feels the principles are the same, be it working with plants and flowers or beads and metals both are to do with shape, texture and colour. It is not surprising with her horticulture background that nature is a big inspiration and many of her pieces include flowers or leaves.

She finishes all her pieces by hand polishing and burnishing them to give them a wonderful rich, organic quality.
