University Is Not For Everyone

Feb. 3, 2010 - PRLog -- With the cost of university fees reportedly set to rise and the jobs market unable to guarantee employment opportunities for graduating students, young people are more than ever considering  alternative career routes.

On 15th October 2009, The Lansdowne Club, Central London, played host to young people currently in Years 11 to 13, with a day of seminars and inter-active activities.  The event – ‘More Than One Route To Success’ – was delivered by Prospects in the City in partnership with Gabbitas, with the aim of highlighting alternative routes that young people can take to progress along their chosen career path. It looked at university options, student finance and how to apply through UCAS, with a talk on ‘What To Expect’ from Brigitte Burrows, Head of Education Liaison and Access at the University of London.

For those considering on-the-job training alternatives there was advice from Tom Mursell of nogoingtouni.co.uk, and presentations by well known organisations EDF Energy, Aon Insurance, Sainsbury’s and the Chartered Surveyors’ Training Trust. There were also opportunities to talk informally with life coaches, careers advisers and representatives from Gapforce, which offers trekking adventures and volunteering opportunities around the world with partners like the Red Cross and UNESCO.

Prospects in the City (PitC) and Gabbitas are both part of the Prospects Group. PitC specialises in providing young people with an insight into the multitude of careers that exist within the financial, legal and media sectors of the City of London. Its seminars, city walks and briefings are designed to raise aspirations, motivate and inform young people by offering up-to-date and accessible information and careers experience sessions. Gabbitas is a leading education consultancy, offering independent guidance to parents, students and schools both in the UK and worldwide.
