Top Sectors For New Business Start Ups In 2009 Named By Selectabase

Jan. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- The research findings come from Selectabase, whose Startupsplus marketing service tracks new business start ups each month.

Analysis of Startupsplus data for 2009 has identified specific industry sectors and geographic regions where start up activity actually increased compared to 2008.

For example, the relentless growth in technology encouraged 23% more computer services providers to start up in business last year, compared to 2008. Computer services also leapt from being the 4th most popular type of business to start up last year, compared to 10th in 2008.

The accountancy sector saw also saw uncharacteristic optimism last year, with 29% more accountants setting up in business compared to 2008, and an amazing 64% more bookkeepers. Both also ranked in the top 50 types of business started in 2009.

Regionally, start up activity saw a shift away from London and the south east last year, to the UK regions, the Midlands and the north of England. The top 5 postcode areas for start ups in 2009 included Birmingham, Belfast, Sheffield, Manchester and Glasgow.

The E postcode area in East London was the only south Eastern region to feature in the top 10, possibly as a result of investment in the area for the 2012 Olympics.

Startupsplus data, on which the research was based, is collected from a number of sources and tracks all types of business start ups including sole traders, limited companies, home based, and whether registered for VAT or not. Overall, almost 80000 new business start ups were identified by Startupsplus in 2009, which is 4% down on the previous year. However the fall was much less than the drop of 7% seen previously from 2007 to 2008.

Commenting on the research findings, Steve Sellwood of Selectabase felt that some might be surprised at the findings, explaining that; “most people assume that new start up activity must shrink to nothing in a recession, but on the contrary we often see new business activity continuing in tough times, sometimes as a result of redundancy, or when a partner decides to return to work by starting a new business. So we weren’t surprised to see start up activity hold up relatively well last year.”
