Jan. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- CIG has learned that Japan has submitted its carbon emissions target to the U.N. Climate Change Secretariat under the Copenhagen climate accord worked out at last months climate summit.

Under the accord developed countries are required to submit targets for emission cuts by January 31 and likewise developing nations are expected to outline their plans for slowing the rise of emissions aimed at preventing the worst effects of global warming.

"I hope that all countries will submit (a target), but ... what's important in order to cut CO2 and to stop global warming is for the United States and China, the greatest emitters, to submit this," CIG believes the  Japanese environment minister was quoted by a ministry official as saying in a recent press conference.

Japan had hoped that its ambitious target would encourage other nations to make similarly large cuts, including the globes top emitters, China and the U.S.A. at the Copenhagen conference, where it was hoped a follow on-treaty to the Kyoto Protocol which expires at the end of 2012 would be hammered out.

Brazil, South Africa, India and China have all recently reaffirmed that they will submit their own plans to the United Nations by the January 31 deadline, CIG has learned.

Researchers and analysts say that the latest figures indicate that the total cuts offered by developed nations amount to no more than around 18% which falls well short of the 25 to 40% that United Nations scientists have indicated is necessary to avoid the worst effect of climate change, including rising sea levels, increased droughts, sandstorms and flooding.
