Gliricidia Trees - The ultimate green machines

If a tree can save the world, then gliricidia is the one. Just twelve months after being planted, it is ready for pruning to produce bio mass fuel for use in power stations.

Jan. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- It's next right for harvesting nine months later and the cycle goes on and on. While all this is happening, the gliricidia is also extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere – a major cause of global warming. Gliricidia is the ultimate green machine.

Burning gliricidia as bio mass is a method of generating electricity with much lower emission levels then fossil fuels, but it's green credentials don't stop there. Gliricidia leaves are harvested annually to produce high protein animal feeds and organic fertilisers. Whilst growing, the tree's roots introduce natural supplies of nitrogen into the soil so improving its fertility and allowing food crops to be grown in between the trees without any need for fertilisers. What's more, the yield outperforms similar crops grown with chemical based fertilisers.

Farmers in South East Asia have grown gliricidia for centuries as a source of fuel wood, animal feed and natural fertiliser. Now Plantation Capital, a global company based in Sri Lanka, is growing the tree commercially to meet the growing needs of the environmentally-conscious world.

Gliricidia planted on Plantation Capital's commercial plantations in Sri Lanka can yield
between 12 to 15 tonnes of fuel wood alone per acre every nine months, as well as feedstocks and fertilisers from the waste leaves, for which there is a strong global market.

Plantation Capital is not only developing it's Dendro Clean Tech Power plants, having
recently taken over Evergreen Energy in Sri Lanka, but easing the pressure on the rainforest with 100,000 acres of renewable energy plantations to supply them. This amounts to 100 megawatts of clean electricity for Sri Lanka alone.

Plantation Capital's investment will represent a commitment of around $250m USD in
power plants and 30 to 40 million in agroforestry plantations, where food crops grow
alongside gliricidia ensuring maximum bio diversity.

Not surprisingly, gliricidia has attracted growing attention not just from commercial
and sustainable plantation companies, but investment bankers, investment funds and forest inhabitants. We will also be launching a Renewable Energy Fund offering an opportunity to be part of our green investment opportunities.
