It becomes obvious that the longing is worsened as the body endures the addiction. They are instructed on what the legal implications will be if they were caught using and abusing. It is a wake up call to those who thought that they were doing something that is not harmful to anyone else but themselves. They do not realize how much money it cost the government to house inmates that were caught doing drugs or indulging in DUI incidents.
Another thing to consider is that a drug and alcohol treatment program provides the easier way to withdraw from the drugs and alcohol because a qualified physician is available to assist. However, in the prison system, rehab is second nature. It is not a priority to the prison system and so inmates have to withdraw from their addiction on their own and this can be a very painful and traumatic encounter with a demon that is stronger than they are.
The paranoia and delusion alone is a nightmare when it comes to detox and the withdrawal process. Without proper medical attention, the person can commit suicide during this process and fail to get further in their recovery because of the trauma that this produces.
