Bah! Humbug! What Ever Happened To Christmas?

New Day Church Uses “Bring a Gift to Jesus” To Rekindle the Hearts of Christians

Jan. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- KETTERING, Ohio - New Day Church (www.newdaysbc.com) recently hosted its first annual Bring a Gift to Jesus worship service, a celebration honoring Christ through creative giving at Christmas. The celebration is the brainchild of Pastor Barry Jude (www.broadlf.com/NewDay/blog), who has employed the emphasis at five different churches over the past 20 years.

“The beauty of Bring a Gift to Jesus is that it encourages all ages to think creatively and more deeply about ways we can honor Jesus on His birthday,” Jude said. “At a time when gifts are on everyone’s mind, this individual expression helps insure that we keep Jesus as the central focus.”

Instead of selecting a church-wide project, Bring a Gift to Jesus is a day of open designations and gift giving, allowing members to decide how they will honor Christ. Church members place their gifts on the altar in a worship celebration that mimics the wise men’s journey to Jesus.

“But it’s not all about money or even serving others. It’s about getting our hearts right for this most important season,” Jude said. “I’ve seen children place crayon drawings or crafts that they made for Jesus on the altar. A boys’ mission education group once brought in several bikes. Children’s furniture was donated at one church to a family that lost their house to fire a few days before. All these are gifts from the heart, too, just as is a monetary gift to world missions.”

Since implementing Bring a Gift to Jesus, the practice has been replicated in other Christian churches and denominations. To further assist, Jude will offer a webinar and materials to facilitate the process for interested churches.
