Jan. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Kanpur: For the first time, cleaning of insulators of high tension 400KV lines in Kanpur will now be carried out with the help of a helicopter

“Though manual cleaning of insulators of high tension lines is possible, it is extremely dangerous and involves high risk. So the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has decided to clean the insulators of the power lines of Kanpur with the help of helicopters,” said Shravan Yadav, Deputy Manager, PGCIL.

The cleaning process is significant as air pollutants, emitted by the industrial units and vehicles, gather on the insulators causing tripping of high tension lines.

On an application submitted by PGCIL, the district administration has already issued a no-objection certificate and work is expected to commence on January 2.

The 400 KV lines are spread across 60 km distance in Kanpur. The cleaning of insulators will be carried out with jet pumps that will be mounted on a helicopter and pump out demineralised (DM) water.

The PGCIL has tied up with Pawan Hans Helicopter Pvt. Ltd, a Government of India undertaking, to arrange the helicopter that will operate from the Bhauti sub-station premises of the power grid firm.

Officials of the PGCIL said the cleaning process will take around a month.

District Magistrate of Kanpur Anil Kumar Sagar said the PGCIL was interested in starting the work on December 27, but due to some reasons it was delayed by a few days.

“During foggy weather, widespread tripping of high tension lines takes place in the northern region, resulting into grid instability. Such phenomenon is more pronounced in and around Kanpur area due to the large-scale pollution,” said Yadav.

He said though anti-fog/pollution insulators had been installed in the newly constructed high tension lines the old lines still don’t have such insulators.

The MOU was signed earlier this week by Mr R.K.Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director of PHHL, and Mr John Samuel, General Manager, Business Development, India Post.

The agreement is for an initial period of two years, which can be renewed on mutually acceptable terms and conditions for support within India and will be open for international logistics solutions also, depending upon performance, an official press release added.
