Jan. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- TORONTO, ON, Jan. 7, 2010- This coming Monday, U of T students and faculty can warm up on their way to class and support a good cause while they’re at it.  The Canadian Hero Fund, a youth-based charity founded by current U of T students and recent graduates, will be selling hot chocolate at the corner of Bloor and St. George St. in support of Canadian military families.

“The recent holidays were especially tough for the Canadian Forces, military families and all Canadians who were touched by the loss of 5 more soldiers and a journalist,” said Michael Ball, Executive Director of the Fund and 4th year student.  “We hope Monday’s event will not only raise money for our cause, but will also raise awareness for the sacrifice Canadian families have made for this country.”

The Canadian Hero Fund launched a new website and marketing campaign nationally last month, but U of T has already made a significant imprint on the charity.  Their first fundraising event was a concert by a U of T vocal student and many of the charity’s advisors are U of T grads.  Inspired by the value of their own undergraduate experience, the Canadian Hero Fund’s founders decided to make their first initiative a scholarship program for the children and spouses of fallen soldiers.

Hot Chocolate for Heroes will take place across from Woodsworth College on St. George Street from 11am to 3pm, Monday January 11.  The Canadian Hero Fund is accepting donations on-site or online at www.herofund.ca.

Founded by university students in 2009, the Canadian Hero Fund is a registered charity dedicated to assisting military families, with a focus on grassroots initiatives and youth engagement. The motto “Keeping Their Dreams Alive” stands for the dreams of the families and children that are sustained through Canadian Hero Fund support programs, as well as the dreams of fallen soldiers who wanted more for future generations.
