9-year-old film critic Perry Chen won an award for his movie review column on San Diego newspaper

Jan. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- 9-year-old Perry S. Chen, the youngest film critic and radio talk show host from San Diego, California, won an award as an “Excellent Writer” for his movie review column published on “We Chinese in America” weekly newspaper with a readership of over 100,000.  Perry will be recognized at “The Night of We Chinese in America” performance, commemorating the publication of the 100th issue of “We Chinese in America” magazine.  Perry will also speak at the event, representing all award-winning writers.  The show will be held on January 17 starting 7 pm, at the Poway Center for Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Rd., Poway, CA 92064.

Perry Chen started writing movie reviews of G and PG-rated films in November 2008 when he was an 8-year-old third grader at the San Diego Del Mar Union School district’s Torrey Hills school.  His first published movie review of French animation master Michel Ocelot’s “Azur and Asmar” appeared on We Chinese in February 2009.  Perry has published 16 movie reviews as a film critic and columnist of We Chinese since.  In addition, his review also appeared on eight other San Diego newspapers.  He is the host of “Perry Previews the Movies” on wsRadio, the worldwide leader in internet talk radio.  Perry reviewed movies on several local television stations regularly.  In 2009, he reviewed 24 G and PG rated films on TV, radio, and in print.

Perry has been extensively featured on regional, national, and international media, including CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, Fox, KUSI, Roots Up Radio, The Big Biz Show, San Diego Union Tribune, San Diego News Network, San Diego Magazine, San Diego Family, World Journal, The China Press, and more.

In 2009, Perry has been invited to attend many film festivals and events as the youngest credentialed media, including Disney D23 expo, San Diego Asian Film Festival, San Diego Film Festival, San Diego International Children’s Film Festival.  He met and interviewed renowned filmmakers such as Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera of Up, John Musker and Ron Clements of “The Princess and the Frog,” Bill Plympton of “Hot Dog” and “The Fan and the Flower,” Michel Ocelot of “Azur and Asmar,” Tze Chun of “Children of Invention,” Laura Bari of “Antoine,” and Howie Snyder of “My Beijing Birthday.”
