Chen, the youngest film critic and radio talk show host from San Diego, won an award as an “Excellent Writer” for his movie review column published on “We Chinese in America” newspaper with a readership of over 100,000.
“I am delighted to present the Excellent Writer award to our youngest columnist Perry,” said Ping Ma, the founder and publisher of “We Chinese in America” magazine and newspaper, “I have been truly impressed by Perry’s diligence, persistence, and talent as a young writer and journalist. I also love his sunny personality. Many readers of our publication were amazed by Perry’s insightful movie reviews from a 9-year-old’s perspective. That is why we selected him as one of a dozen columnists receiving this award among our 200 plus contributing authors. We wish Perry continued success in all his creative pursuits.” Perry Chen started writing movie reviews of G and PG-rated films in November 2008 when he was an 8-year-old third grader at the San Diego Del Mar Union School district’s Torrey Hills school. His first published movie review of French animation master Michel Ocelot’s “Azur and Asmar” appeared on We Chinese in February 2009. Perry has published 16 movie reviews as a film critic and columnist of We Chinese since. In addition, his review also appeared on eight other San Diego newspapers. He is the host of “Perry Previews the Movies” on wsRadio, the worldwide leader in internet talk radio. Perry reviewed movies on several local television stations regularly. In 2009, he reviewed 24 G and PG rated films on TV, radio, and in print. Perry has been extensively featured on regional, national, and international media, including CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, Fox, KUSI, Roots Up Radio, The Big Biz Show, San Diego Union Tribune, San Diego News Network, San Diego Magazine, San Diego Family, World Journal, The China Press, and more.
