What happening?

Colts Keys For Success
1. Maximize the starters. Every indication points to Caldwell playing several front-line players only a series or two. That includes Manning, wide receiver Reggie Wayne and tight end Dallas Clark. A productive start by the Manning-led offense might provide the backups with the necessary cushion for victory.

2. Minimize mistakes. Rookie Backup QB Curtis Painter committed two crippling turnovers while directing six series in last week's loss to the Jets. Painter must be more careful with the ball. It will be difficult moving the ball against Buffalo's starters, and that can't be compounded by mistakes. The Colts' backups aren't good enough to beat the Bills if they're beating themselves.

3. Keep tabs on the Bills' running backs. Given the chance, Buffalo will spend the afternoon jamming Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch down the throats of the Colts' second-string front seven. Linebacker Clint Session (knee) will not play, and linebackers Gary Brackett and Philip Wheeler likely will see limited playing time. If the defense can limit the damage the Bills do on the ground, it should be able to hold its own against inexperienced QB Brian Brohm or banged-up QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (ankle).

Bills Keys For Success
1. Don't fall behind early. The Bills' inability to start fast has been a big factor in the team's poor record. The Colts probably will try to come out and build a good lead early so they can get Manning out of the game. If the Bills can get a quick jump on an Indy team that might lack focus in a meaningless game, it would hasten Manning's departure and increase the Bills' chances of winning.

2. Run the ball. The Bills are coming off their worst rushing performance of the season (40 yards on 18 carries) in a lopsided loss at Atlanta. Jackson and Lynch must be more involved in the offense to take pressure off Brohm/Fitzpatrick. The Colts are fast up front but not big, and the Jets mauled them for 202 yards rushing last week. The Bills will try to establish similar physical dominance Sunday.

3. Attack the Colts' secondary. The Colts rely on their pass rush to compensate for a lackluster group of defensive backs. But if defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis don't play Sunday, their young secondary might be exposed. The Bills' offensive line hasn't protected well all season, but Fitzpatrick or Brohm might be able to get the ball to receivers Owens and Lee Evans downfield against backups.
