“I wish all the Alumni and their family members a very happy and prosperous New Year 2010. I am extremely happy to address you all in the New Year. I am sure that the New Year brings new hopes, vigour and prosperity to all the BITSians.

We at BITS have been involved in preparing the future plan of the Institute. On the directions of the Chancellor, Dr Kumar Mangalam Birla and initiatives taken by the Institute, VISION 2020 - MISSION 2012 project is currently underway. Intensive workshop sessions and Town Hall meetings at all campuses of the Institute have been organized.

For achieving MISSION 2012 goals, various task forces consisting of faculty members from all the campuses have been formed. A project office has also been established at Pilani to provide support and monitor the progress of the project. The various aspects on which attention is being focussed are: Academic Programmes & pedagogy, People, Research & Consultancy, University Administration, Campus Life and Infrastructure.

The year 2009 has been an eventful year for the institute. In January, the institute received reaccredidation from NAAC with an ‘A’ Grade and a CGPA of 3.71 on a scale of 4. The Distance Education Council (DEC) committee visited the Institute and appreciated the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) programmes of the Institute for Human Resource Development of Industry Professionals. The council has given its ex-post-facto approval of all the WIL programmes offered by the Institute since 1995 till 2007-2008.

The Institute continued to maintain its ranking as the top institute among all private engineering and technology institutions in the country. The various popular magazines like India Today, Outlook, LiveMint, Dataquest ranked the Institute among top 10 along with the IITs.

Robots designed by two teams of 7 students from BITS won one silver and two bronze medals at the prestigious Robogames 2009 held in Fort Mason, San Francisco USA. AcYut the humanoid received wide support from BITSAA and many companies.  Display of AcYut in German Expo in September drew a large crowd apart from media attention in a big way.

The Institute organized a number of national and international conferences and workshops during the year which included Advances in Concrete, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering; Virtual and Intelligent Instrumentation; Green Manufacturing; Introduction to Graph and Geometric Algorithms; High Performance Digital System Design and Vacuum Technology and its Applications to Electronic Devices and Systems jointly with CEERI Pilani.

Former President Hon’ble Dr APJ Abdul Kalam inaugurated the QUARK 2009 Tech Fest at Goa campus and addressed the students in February.

A large number of alumni with families visited BITS to celebrate their Silver Jubilee and Coral Jubilee reunions at Pilani. The 1966-71 batch also visited the Institute alongwith their families. On all the occasions, there was nostalgia all over the campus.

It is a matter of great satisfaction and pride that the Alumni of the Institute have performed extremely well in their chosen profession and many have significantly contributed in the development of the Institute. In the coming years, the institute is planning to recognize Alumni who have excelled and contributed to the development of the society.

The Passion Quotient for the alma mater is highest among the alumni of Birla Institute of Technology and Science - BITS Pilani as is evident from the punch line spearheaded by the BITS Alumni Association “The Journey Continues”. BITSians have taken pride in acknowledging the Transformational Experience they had undergone during their student years at BITS.

I take this opportunity to give a clarion call to all alumni to contribute and participate in all possible manners so that the institute achieves excellence and makes its mark globally in the years to come.”
