Recently released market study: Thailand Telecommunications Report Q1 2010

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

Dec. 31, 2009 - PRLog -- Could consolidation of Thailand's market be on the cards? Hutchison Telecom has refrained from reporting its KPIs for Q209, as its parent company decides on whether to exit the Thai mobile market. The operator, which has been discounting its inactive subscriber base, and is estimated by BMI to have had 1.020mn subscribers as of Q209, has most likely been concerned by the existing maturity of the sector. For market leader AIS and second-ranked DTAC, the operators reported a fall in net profits in Q309, down by 7.7% y-o-y and 11.3% y-o-y, respectively. Both operators, along with third-ranked True Move, which reported a net loss of THB563mn (THB83mn higher than the previous quarter) in Q209, have attributed the weak results to the economic slowdown and a slump in tourist activity due to swine flu. This problem, and the fact that Thailand's regulatory body remains inefficient - the sector is still awaiting the auction of 3G licences two years on - has perhaps been a major factor for Hutchison Telecom to consider the future of its Thai mobile sector. Given that it has a market share of around 1.6%, the operator could easily be absorbed by one of the top three operators without upsetting the market. Indeed, Hutchison Telecom could be an attractive asset, given that it maintains a higher percentage of postpaid subscribers compared to any other operator. Within the fixed-line market, demand for services is in decline. TOT revealed that, at the end of 2008, there were 6.665mn lines, which was down from 6.709mn reported in the previous year. The affordability of mobile services, which has come down significantly, has made fixed line increasingly unattractive. To this end, Thailand's fixed-line operators are looking to focus on the broadband market. The three fixedline operators, TOT, True and TT&T, are able to provide fixed-line and wireless broadband, as they also hold mobile businesses. Demand for broadband services in terms of lower prices and also higher speeds is on the rise across Thailand, and operators have expressed concern over the widening digital divide occurring between rural and urban markets. True, which retains a majority market share of 50% in the broadband sector, is looking to invest THB3.5-5bn in new technology and coverage services such as WiMAX and VDSL, as well as FTTB in the next two years. BMI is forecasting that the number of broadband subscribers will reach 2.2mn by the end of 2009, before rising to 13.4mn as of 2014, representing a 20.2% share of the population. This will surpass internet penetration rates for the first time, at 16.9% in 2014.
