What happening?

Playoff implications aside, emotions will ride high Sunday when Brian Dawkins makes his anticipated, emotional return to the city where he became an icon. Dawkins made seven Pro Bowls in his 13 seasons for the Eagles, second most in franchise history behind Chuck Bednarik, and became the rare Philadelphia athlete to earn unconditional love from the city's stubborn and unsympathetic fan base. His controversial departure to Denver stunned his fans, who still blame the front office for allowing the team's most popular player to walk. . . . The Eagles won't have problems putting aside feelings and distractions from Dawkins' return to focus on bigger issues ahead. They're clinging to a one-game lead over the Cowboys for the NFC East title, which has become an airtight race. The Eagles also (10-4) trail the Vikings (11-3) by only one game for the second seed, which would guarantee them a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the second round. The Broncos are one of eight AFC teams in contention for two wild-card spots. At one point -- when it started 6-0 -- it seemed like Denver wouldn't have any problems making the playoffs. But the team has lost six of its past eight games, including an embarrassing 20-19 Week 15 home loss to the Raiders that put the Broncos' postseason aspirations on thin ice. Six other teams are one game behind Denver for the AFC's second wild card. . . . Brian Westbrook is expected to play for the Eagles after missing the past five games to recover from his second concussion from consecutive games. The team, surprisingly, went 5-0 in that span and didn't score fewer than 24 points in any of the five games. The Eagles are now the NFL's second-highest scoring team behind New Orleans.
