Dec. 22, 2009 - PRLog -- What is Page Rank?

It is better to know it before discussing further.

PageRank is the numeric value assigned by the Google to show the importance of the web page. It ranges between 0 to 10 scale with 10 being highest rank.

PageRank is based on the number of websites linking to your website and the number of websites linking to them and so on. The concept of PageRank is very clear like the more quality links pointing to your website the higher PageRank your website have.

How To See the PageRank of a Web Page?

You will need to have the Google Toolbar installed or, if you are using FireFox, the SearchStatus plugin to see the PageRank of a particular web page.

When you are browsing the internet and finding the PageRank , it is important to know that the PageRank you see in Google Toolbar (shown as “ Toolbar PageRank) is different to the real PageRank of web page. Google updates PageRank in real-time and updates the Toolbar once every 2 to 3 months.  This means that the PageRank which appears in the Toolbar may be different from what it is actually. So be aware that the result you are seeing in the PageRank Toolbar is just an indicator and not actual.

Does PageRank affect SEO?

Of course, Yes.

There are more than one hundred different factors of Google’s algorithm for ranking web pages and PageRank is also one of those. PageRank is not the Only factor to rank in Google, a webpage with zero PageRank will not rank for a competitive keyword phrase. Your web page must have PageRank to be in the competition of ranking top in Google Results.

Quality and Quantity of the links pointing to your website both are significant factors for overall SEO Rankings. Quality measured with PageRank of those links and Quantity with the number of linke you have pointing to your website. For instance, a website can achieve top ranking in Google results with low number of quality links or with high number of low quality links.

Hence, it is needless to say that a link from adobe.com is worth significantly more than a link from a small blog as there are millions of sites linking to Adobe’s website giving it a PageRank of 9, and only a dozen of sites linking to the smaller blog giving it a PageRank of 1.

One should always keep this thing in mind that any SEO Campaign will have a combination of low and high PageRank links but the more high PageRank links you can obtain pointing to your website, the lower the number of links you will need to achieve top SEO Rankings.

Is there any Future of PageRank?

This has been a all time topic of debate in the SEO industry on whether showing Toolbar PageRank is beneficial or not. In my opinion it is beneficial because you can use it as part of your SEO Campaign to help in identifying high quality websites for linking as well as resolving on-page SEO issues like duplicate content (i.e. no PageRank assigned to pages with duplicate content).

The PageRank concept was introduced by Google revolutionized the Internet and made Google the Ruling Leader because it has completely changed the way that Search Engines ranked websites.

Before Google started looking at links to rank websites, search engines would use on-page factors, which was much easier to abuse. With links being the very important factor in a top SEO ranking, the quality and accuracy of search results improved significantly.

Links are still playing a major important part of top SEO rankings and even if Google decides to continue displaying Toolbar PageRank or hide it, PageRank will always be a major part of Google algorithm.

What after PageRank?

Though PageRank has made Google the Leading technology company in the world, a new type of search engine introducing itself that’s the real-time search engine.

Google has got the expertise in finding, sorting and ranking web pages on the internet and helping people to make their searches easy, but with the limitations on this – it can only search in the past, not in the present.

Real-time search engines have been working around for a few years as social bookmarking sites such as digg.com, delicious.com and latest tweetmeme.com where you can find out what is happening with a particular topic in real-time by conducting a search for that topic.

These sites rely on people to find and vote for web pages around the Internet rather than relying on computers to find, sort and rank results.

Although, Real-time search engines produce better results for news and discussions but searching for a particular product or service provider using Google instead of real-time search engines is still preferable.

Google has also started following the trend of social bookmarking sites functionality on their search results as Search Wiki that allows you to vote a site up or down when you are online. This indicates that they are already looking at their user’s votes or preferences as part of their ranking algorithm.

Hence, PageRank played a very important and significant role as they made sense of how the Internet linked between pages and produces highly accurate results. And it is sure that PageRank will remain as a part of search engine algorithm till the websites exist.
