Dec. 15, 2009 - PRLog -- LANDMARK STUDY LINKS CHANGES IN CORTISOL AND PROLACTIN AS MECHANISM FOR ACUPUNCTURES POSITIVE IMPACT ON IN VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF) PREGNANCY OUTCOMES
Colorado Springs, CO (12/5/2009) – PAUL C. MAGARELLI, MD, Ph.D. FACOG

After seven years of research and numerous publications the mechanism of action of Acupuncture on IVF pregnancies has been elucidated by two Colorado health care providers: Paul C Magarelli, M.D., Ph.D., FACOG and Founder of Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Centers and the University of New Mexico’s IVF center and Diane K. Cridennda, L.Ac., D.OM.(New Mexico), FABORM, (Fellow and Founding Board of Director for the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine).  This publication realizes their goal for to enhance and to understand ways that high tech fertility treatments can be augmented with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  Dr Magarelli reports in the journal Fertility & Sterility (Dec 2009, Vol 92 No 6) that this almost 4,000 year old medicine is now scientifically proven to increase pregnancy rates, decrease miscarriages, reduce ectopic pregnancies and thereby create more Take Home Babies, an amazing 26% in some of their studies!  What is most important is that Dr Magarelli and colleagues have discovered a mechanism of action of Acupuncture treatment on IVF outcomes and it appears to involve the endocrine stress hormones: Cortisol and Prolactin.  The data supports a theory of Acupuncture’s effect, i.e., Acupuncture “corrects” for the negative changes and brings patients to homeostasis.  In this case it positively adjusts the levels of Cortisol and Prolactin during the stimulation phase of an IVF cycle to a more “normal fertile” cycle.  This is a world’s first!

His latest research has been accepted for publication in a prestigious Western journal Fertility and Sterility. He and Diane Cridennda have also published another world’s first, i.e., a Chapter in a Western fertility text book on the role of TCM on fertility care. {INFERTILITY AND ASSISTED REPRODUCTION, CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL PRESS}
.
Dr Magarelli says “Who would have thought that Eastern medicine would have such a powerful impact on high tech fertility treatments and that the mechanism of its action relates directly to the stress hormones Cortisol and Prolactin.”

Ray Rubio, L.Ac. and president of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine states…. "The publication of the upcoming study by Magarelli et al in the December issue of Fertility & Sterility (Fertility and Sterility Vol. 92, No. 6, December 2009) on the possible hormonal and physiologic mechanisms accounting for the increase in clinical pregnancy rates in IVF cycles conducted with adjunctive acupuncture, is an important addition to our understanding of this synergy between east and west, ancient and modern medicine in the treatment of couples trying to conceive".
