Dec. 14, 2009 - PRLog -- Roswell, NM – Cosmetology students at Aladdin Academy, 108 South Union in Roswell achieved out-of-this-world results at the recent “Committed to Excellence” Educational Forum in Fort Worth, Texas.  In addition to Michelle Garcia who captured first place in the Fantasy Mannequin category, and Jenni Hamill who won first place for the Bridal Mannequin competition, the school also received 2nd place for Fantasy Mannequin , 3rd place for Bridal Mannequin, and 3rd and 5th place in the Three-Person Team Competition.
The Roswell student competed against future cosmetologists from nine beauty schools in Texas, including ITS Academy and Aladdin Beauty College; six schools in New Mexico and Oklahoma, including the Olympian University campuses and Aladdin Beauty College, and the International Academy of Hair Design in Arizona.
There were three categories: a competition for a Bridal Mannequin, a Fantasy Mannequin, as well as a three-person team event.  In the competition that Hamill won, students were told to create a beautiful and fashionable bridal up-do with a “total look” theme that included make-up decorations, ornamentation and clothing.  Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.
Hamill designed a classic updo with barrel curls, however she added modern flair by forming chain links out of the hair.  She chose iridescent coral fabric as a draping.
For the fantasy competition, students were encouraged to pull out the stops on their themed entry to create a hair and makeup idea that would wow the judges, spectators and fellow students.  Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.
Garcia’s fantasy mannequin used a winter snowflake theme with turquoise accent colors and a modern asymmetrical hair cut.
“Both girls are wonderful, hard-working and creative students,” said Kristi Eaton, instructor at the Roswell cosmetology school.  “I was super excited and cried like a baby out of happiness.  We are a small school of maybe 30-40 students, but we really won a lion’s share of the awards.”
Other winners in the mannequin competition included: Tammy Briscoe, 2nd place in the Fantasy Competition with a Japanese cherry blossom theme, Patti Nuñez placed third, Fantasy Competition with a sunflower theme creation and Marisela Hernandez captured 3rd place in the Bridal Competition with a modern, hot pink and silver look.
In the team category, Hamill, Starlarose Ortega, Jessica Mendoza and model Elisa Aguilar won third place with their chocoholic-themed creation, and Caylah Call, Garcia, Tiffany Salazar and model Stefany Baeza won 5th place for their I Dream of Jeannie entry.
“All of our students worked very hard and we are proud of each and every one of them,” said Eaton.  “They used the excellent education they’ve received, added their own creativity and hard work, and made masterpieces using hair, makeup and ornamentation.”
The 1600-hour cosmetology curriculum consists of: Theory of Cosmetology and New Mexico Law; Haircutting; Shampooing; Hair Coloring; Hair Styling; Chemical Hair Restructuring; Lightening; Facials and Makeup; Massage; Nail Technology; Treatment of the Hair and Scalp; Electricity and Light Therapy; Creative Preference; Disinfection Procedures; as well as lectures and demonstrators on the uses of new products and tools of the trade. Graduates are eligible to apply for a license through the New Mexico State of Cosmetology.
The instructor course consists of a 1000-hour program that trains the student in the basic teaching skills, educational judgments, proper work habits, and desirable attitudes necessary to pass the State Board examination and for competency in job entry level employment as an instructor or related career avenue.
