Dec. 14, 2009 - PRLog -- The Victorian energy regulator, the Essential Services Commission, has reported that energy complaints have risen by 127% in the past 12 months.  Billing complaints have been highlighted as the most significant contributor, with a rise of almost 200%.
Victoria is following in the steps of South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, who have all seen significant increases in complaints in the past 12 months.  Over half of the complaints were generated from billing issues, highlighting issues with estimated accounts, as opposed to bills based on actual meter readings.  The regulator also pinpoints a rise in marketing and account transfer related complaints.
Tim Wolfenden, CEO of Make It Cheaper, Australia’s first dedicated price comparison and switching service for small businesses comments: “It comes as no surprise to see such massive rises in energy complaints.  With increased competition, suppliers have to find ways to differentiate them, unfortunately sometimes this results in suppliers setting themselves apart with bad service, rather than offering improved service and competitive pricing.
“Up till last year small businesses have seen consistent reductions in the price they pay for their energy, but in the past 12 months bills have started to go up again.  There are price differences of over $1400 between the cheapest and most expensive suppliers in Victoria, which means it’s extremely worthwhile shopping around for cheaper deals.“
“Small businesses do not have to put up with poor service and uncompetitive prices – they have a choice.  Small businesses should start to vote with their feet, and switch to suppliers who are offering a fair price and a better service.”
Victoria has the highest gross switching rate for electricity customers in Australia at a rate of 25%, followed by South Australia with 17%, New South Wales with 11% and Queensland with 9%.
