Dec. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- CARP Tournament Series established an annual book scholarship in honor of the late Alan “Al” Kowaleski.  The longtime carp fisherman and carp angling historian, Kowaleski succumbed to cancer at his home in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania December two years ago.

Known across the United States for his verve and dedication to the sport, Kowaleski was active in several carp angling associations including Carp Anglers Group (CAG).  He served as head marshal for the 2005 World Carp Championship and as grand marshal for the 2004 St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament.

“Al’s knowledge of carp angling and its history in America was undisputed in carp angling circles,” said David Moore, director of CARP Tournament Series.  “His kind heart always shined, but he was at his best when helping kids learn the sport of carp angling.”

“Whether fishing side-by-side, competing or coordinating tournaments, Al was the consummate sportsman and jovial volunteer, and it is befitting that we pay homage to him in a way that would benefit future generations of sportsman and conservationists.  We will award two two-hundred-fifty dollar book scholarships each year to college level students majoring in fisheries management or fisheries biology.”

CARP Tournament Series sets aside a portion of tournament entry fees to establish the annual book scholarships.  Last year’s recipient was Ms. Karen Howland who is studying veterinarian sciences at a college in Binghamton NY.  Howland is an honor student whose passions include carp fishing and tournament competition.

The scholarships will be determined by a panel of administrators including Moore and Kathleen Kelly-Ori, publicist for CARP Tournament Series along with carp anglers Bob Bernowski, Mark Metzger and Mike Malone.

Details about the scholarship and how to apply can be located on the CARP Tournament Series website—www.carptournamentseries.com.
