WASHINGTON, DC.  (December 8, 2009) — 826 National, a family of seven nonprofits that mobilizes volunteers to work with students ages six to eighteen on their writing skills, announces its newest chapter—826DC.

826 National, co-founded by award-winning author Dave Eggers and award-winning educator Nínive Calegari, supports current and forthcoming 826 chapters, helping them to duplicate the success of the original 826 Valencia program.

DC’s Capitol Letters writing center, which started in 2008, previously shared a collegial exchange of ideas and inspiration with 826 National, will now become a formal chapter which enables an exchange of resources and allows 826DC to further its mission to support teachers in the schools and student writing.

“Our programs,” said Executive Director Naomi Ayala, “help children and teens see for themselves their increased potential to succeed. The District's great spirit of volunteerism is the force that fuels our work. We have proven that we are part of a community that cares about partnerships and values collaborative work.  It is our collective concern and shared accountability for the District's youth that have enabled us to succeed.”

With volunteer support, 826DC will offer 826 National’s model of after-school tutoring, class field trips, writing workshops, and in-schools programs—all free of charge. All of 826 National’s chapters are especially committed to supporting teachers, publishing student work, and offering services for English language learners.

826 National Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Nínive Calegari said she is “proud that 826DC will continue our mission of providing students with a safe, fun, and creative environment in which they can hone their writing skills. We are honored and thrilled 826DC is our newest family member.”
