Dec. 7, 2009 - PRLog -- The Kornylak Corporation shipped four Vertiflo® conveyors for installation on board the U.S. Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, the LHA-6, currently being built by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB) in Pascagoula, MS.

Watertight, blast-resistant, and able to handle loads of up to 200 lbs. at high speeds, the Vertiflo is the world’s most compact vertical conveyor.  It offers simultaneous loading and unloading at all floor levels regardless of direction. For Navy ships, it’s often used to move heavy loads from one deck to another at rapid speeds. Compared to a freight elevator, the Vertiflo triples handling speed, occupies less than one fourth of the space, and costs as little as one tenth of the price.

This recent purchase by the Navy marks a long-standing relationship that began in 1951, when Kornylak delivered its first Vertiflo conveyor to the U.S. Navy’s Supply Research and Development Facility in Bayonne, New Jersey. Over the years, Kornylak continued to improve the Vertiflo conveyor’s design and functionality to meet the latest, most stringent military specifications.

To date, the Kornylak Corporation has built a total of 36 such high-speed package conveyors for the Navy’s massive aircraft carrier ships, and more than 400 vertical conveyors of load capacities up to 4,000 lbs. for other various ships, including fast frigates, cruisers, and destroyers.

About the LHA-6
The LHA-6 is due to deliver to the U.S. Navy in 2012. It will be the fourth U.S. Navy ship in history to be christened the USS America. The LHA-6 is the first of the Navy’s America class amphibious assault ships to replace the former Tarawa class ships. With enhanced aviation capability and an enlarged hangar deck, it will be the Navy’s largest and most flexible warfare ship. The America will have capacity for V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor helicopters and F-35B vertical/short take-off and landing (V/STOL) strike fighters.
